The Cape Girardeau Farmers Market will have its opening day from noon to 5 p.m. Thursday, April 21, at the West Park Mall parking lot, 3049 William St. in Cape Girardeau. The open-air market includes fruits, vegetables, agricultural products and more, and will be open every Thursday at the same time through Nov. 17.
The Jackson Area Chamber of Commerce will host its 24th annual golf tournament at 11 a.m. Friday, April 22, at Kimbeland Country Club, 2175 E. Jackson Blvd. in Jackson. Lunch will begin at 11 a.m. and tee-off will be at noon. A four-person golf team will cost $460, or $500 to have a team and hole sponsorship. Skins and mulligans will cost $20 each per team. The City of Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department will hold its 31st annual Great Cape Clean-up and Friends of the Parks Day beginning at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, April 23, at Capaha Park Shelter 2, the corner of Broadway and West End Boulevard in Cape Girardeau. Volunteers are needed to help plant flower beds, mulch playgrounds, paint playground equipment and more in various parks in Cape Girardeau. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and the cleanup will start at 9. Volunteers will receive a free lunch and T-shirt. Also as part of the Parks Day, the Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center and the Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department will host a clean up event to benefit Cape LaCroix Creek. Volunteers are asked to meet at the 4-H Shelter in Arena Park, 410 Kiwanis Drive, to divide and conquer. Lunch and T-shirts will be provided afterward in Capaha Park.
Lazy L Safari Park will host its third annual Sensory Safari, an educational event for special needs children, from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 23, at the park, 2763 County Road 618 in Cape Girardeau. Registration is not required. The event will include animal encounters and a sensory touch and feel area with antlers, eggs, quills, feathers and more. All activities are included in the general zoo admission of $7, except for animal feed and pony and camel rides, which will cost $5. The Always and Forever Bridal Show will be from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 22, at The Venue, 80 S. Plaza Way in Cape Girardeau. The event will include giveaways, samples, ideas and inspiration and a number of different services catered toward weddings and engagements. There will be an entry fee of $5 per person. St. John's Lutheran Church will host its second annual quilt show from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 23, at the church, 158 Little St. in Pocahontas. Nearly 100 quilts of all shapes and sizes, including many vintage quilts, will be on display. The display is part of the Mississippi River Valley Scenic Drive, which takes place April 23 and 24.
Operation Christmas Child, which provides shoeboxes filled with gifts to needy children around the world, will hold two opportunities for the Cape Girardeau community to meet Alex Nsemgimana, an orphan who survived Rwandan genocide and is a shoebox recipient. Nsemgimana will tell his inspiring story at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 24, at Cape Bible Chapel, 2911 Kage Road in Cape Girardeau, and at 6 p.m. the same day at First Baptist Church of Farmington, 210 N. A St. in Farmington, Missouri. Operation Christmas Child is a project of Samaritan's Purse that was started in 1993 and has since delivered gift-filled shoeboxes to more than 120 million children in need.
The Steamboat Classic Triathlon will be from 9 a.m. to noon Sunday, April 24, at Central Municipal Pool, 1920 Whitener St. in Cape Girardeau. Registration is $12, and the triathlon will consist of a 450-meter swim at Central Municipal Pool, a 15 1/2-mile bike ride and a 5-mile run throughout Cape Girardeau. Registration will begin at 7 a.m. and the race will begin at 9 a.m. This is a USAT-sanctioned event, and non-USAT members will have to pay the $12 registration fee. Messy Morning, an event full of hands-on creative activities for babies and children of all ages, will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 30, at the Show Me Center, 1333 N. Sprigg St. in Cape Girardeau. The event is free and will focus on equipping parents with ideas to help teach their children to play while learning about science. Parents are encouraged to bring easy slip-on and -off shoes and a change of clothes for their children. There will be a canned food drive as well to collect food for the Southeast Missouri Food Bank.
