Jackson recycling hours change

The hours for the Jackson Recycling Center, 508 Sawyer Lane, will be changing. Beginning April 7, the center will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., according to a Jackson Public Works Department news release. The expanded hours for the center will continue through Oct. 27. New information boards installed at Cape's floodwall murals

On Thursday, March 22, new Mural Interpretation Boards were installed along the Missouri Wall of Fame in downtown Cape Girardeau.

Old Town Cape Inc. received a grant from the Missouri Humanities Council (MHC) to help fund the redesign and reprinting of the Interpretation Boards, and partnered with VisitCape to complete the project, according to a news release.

The Missouri Wall of Fame Mural features nearly 50 individuals who were born in Missouri or achieved fame while living in the state. The mural was originally designed in 1995 by local artist Margaret Randol Dement, and was restored in 2006 by Chicago artists Thomas Melvin, Cameron Pfiffner and Marian Voinea, along with local artists Craig Thomas and Scott Kelley. In 2017, the image of General Seth Mckee was added to the mural by local artist Craig Thomas, the release stated.

New scholarship established at Southeast Missouri State University

The Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity Endowed Scholarship was established through the Southeast Missouri University Foundation, through the Pi Kappa Alpha Traditions Campaign led by a committee of Pi Kappa Alpha alumni in conjunction with the Foundation. As of March 26, more than $66,800 had been raised from Pi Kappa Alpha alumni to create the award, and the Foundation matched the gift with an additional $20,000. The Traditions Campaign also included fundraising toward the new Pi Kappa Alpha House located in Southeast's Greek Village.

The campaign continues through June 30 of this year.

The renewable scholarship will be awarded to a full-time initiated or potential new member of the Epsilon Iota Chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha that has demonstrated involvement with the Epsilon Iota Chapter and is living in the Pi Kappa Alpha house located at 1436 Show Me Drive. The scholarship is designed to reward members who live in the Greek Village house and are impactful in the fraternity's success via scholastics and dedication to the fraternity's values. Recipients must live on campus during the term in which the award is presented. They must also be in good academic standing with the University and the Epsilon Iota Chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha with an overall minimum 2.25 grade point average.

The Pi Kappa Alpha Traditions Campaign Committee in conjunction with the Greek Life director will select the recipient.

Southeast finishes second in Cyber Defense Competition

Southeast Missouri State University's cyber defense team took second place at the 2018 Erich J. Spenger Midwest Regional Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition (CCDC), finishing behind Indiana Tech, according to a university news release. The competition was held at Moraine Valley Community College in Palos Hills, Illinois, on March 23-24. Southeast advanced to the Midwest competition after taking first place at the Missouri Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition for the sixth straight year.

Fried chicken supper in Altenburg April 8

Immanuel Lutheran Church in Altenburg is having their Annual Fried Chicken Supper on Sunday, April 8. Serving starts at 3 p.m. in the Church's Parish Hall and is "Family Style."

Adults eat for $9.00, Children 6-12 years for $5.00, and 5 years and under eat free. Carry-outs are available and can be reserved by calling (573) 824-5452. In addition, the Congregation and LWML Ladies will have Country Store items available for sale.
