Genealogical group seeks nominations for award

The Missouri State Genealogical Association Awards Committee is seeking recommendations for individuals or institutions to be considered for an Award of Merit or Certificate of Appreciation. It is not required to be a MoSGA member to recommend an individual or institution for an award, nor does the nominee have to be a MoSGA member to receive an award. Send nominations to the Awards Committee, care of MoSGA, at P.O. Box 883, Columbia, MO 65205-0833. The deadline for receipt of nominations is June 1.

Civil War exhibit on display in Southern Illinois

A special exhibit on the Civil War is being featured at the Union County Museum in Cobden, Ill., to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the war's beginning. The exhibit will include weaponry such as guns and a sword, photos, documents, an 1863 5-by-7-inch parade flag, an issue of the Mound City Gazette detailing the Battle of Bull Run and other Civil War era items. Normal operating hours for the museum are 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday and the exhibit will continue until early summer. For more information, visit www.unioncountyilmuseum.com.

*** Lutheran church serving whole-hog dinner March 20

The St. Paul Lutheran Church in Jackson will be having a grilled whole-hog sausage dinner from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 20 in the school cafeteria. The meal will include grilled sausage, buttered potatoes, green beans, white beans, sauerkraut, applesauce, bread, drinks and dessert. Price is $8 for adults, $4 for children ages 6 to 12 and free for children younger than 6. Carry-outs will be available.

Hunter education classes offered at Nature Center

A hunter education workshop will be from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Cape Girardeau Nature Center. The hunter education certification course is required for anyone born Jan. 1, 1967, or after, who wants to hunt with a firearm in Missouri. Students must be at least 11 years old at the start of the class. Participants must attend both sessions and pass a test to receive certification. All students 15 and younger must bring proof of age and those 12 and younger must be accompanied by an adult. Bring any previously purchased permits to class. Catfish and chicken dinner served at New McKendree

New McKendree United Methodist Church is having a fried catfish and chicken tenders sinner from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the New McKendree Celebration Center. The meal will include catfish and/or chicken tenders, coleslaw, baked beans, spiral potatoes, dessert and a drink. Price for adults is $8, $5 for children ages 5 to 12 and children younger than 5 eat free.

Kiwanis Club's annual dance planned for April 9

The Kiwanis Club will host its annual '50s and '60s rock 'n' roll dance party from 8 p.m. to midnight April 9 at the Arena Building. Bruce "Hey Baby" Channel will headline the event and perform with The Decade Band along with vocalist Kim Keele-Jasinski. Along with live music, there will be prizes for a dance and costume competition.
