Southeast Hospice seeks volunteers

Southeast Hospice is seeking volunteers to help terminal patients and their families. Southeast Hospice provides 12 to 15 hours of training for volunteers; topics include communication skills, family dynamics, grief and patient and family rights. Activities are varied. In addition to volunteers, the Southeast Hospice team includes doctors, nurses, social workers, ministers and nurse assistants. Southeast Hospice serves patients and their families in Bollinger, Cape Girardeau, Perry and Scott counties and portions of Stoddard, Mississippi and New Madrid counties. Local charities in Community Aces Challenge

Several local charities are competing with organizations in seven states as part of Community Aces Challenge, a social media contest launched by Isle of Capri Casinos Inc. to award winning nonprofit agencies a share of $50,000. Area organizations seeking votes are A Sister's Hope, CASA of Southeast Missouri, Iron Mountain Railway, Humane Society of Southeast Missouri, SEMO Alliance for Disability Independence Inc., Southeast Missouri Children's Museum and Caruthersville Humane Society. More than 300 nonprofit organizations applied to participate in the challenge; 150 eligible projects were selected to compete. Voting is Facebook-based, and runs through March 20. At the conclusion of voting, two $15,000 grants and two $10,000 grants will be awarded by Isle's Community Aces Fund administered by the Greater Saint Louis Community Foundation. Voting and rules are at communityaceschallenge.com. Voters must be logged in to Facebook to participate.

Lutheran Chorale to perform in Perryville, Cape

The Perry County Lutheran Chorale will have a Lenten music concert at 7 p.m. Friday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Perryville, Missouri, and at 3 p.m. Sunday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cape Girardeau. Admission is free; a freewill donation will be accepted in support of the chorale.

Chili, soup and chowder supper set

The FCE Clubs of Brazeau and Farrar, Missouri, will host a chili, oyster soup and clam chowder supper from 3:30 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Brazeau Community Hall. A freewill donation will be accepted.

Fish fry at Lutheran church in Tilset

Immanuel Lutheran Church, in Tilsit, 496 Route F in Jackson, will host a fish fry at 3:30 p.m. March 8. The menu also will include chicken strips, baked beans, slaw, potato salad, dessert and more. Cost is $9 for adults and $5 for children ages 6 through 12; there is no charge for children 5 years old and younger. Carryouts will be available. A portion of the proceeds will be given to Hope Children's Home in Jackson.

Poker tourney to raise funds for Legion baseball

The third annual Ron Michel Memorial Texas Hold'em poker tournament will be held March 14 at the Cape American Legion Hall, 2731 Thomas Drive in Cape Girardeau. Doors will open at 4 p.m. and the tourney will start at 5 p.m. Buy-in is $50; spectator donation is $20. All proceeds will benefit American Legion Post 63 baseball. Prizes will be awarded to the final table; and there will be cash awards to the top five finishers. Food and drinks, including beer and frozen beverages, will be available; BYOB permitted. Scott City church sets spring dinner

St. Joseph Catholic Church in Scott City will host a spring dinner on Palm Sunday, March 29, at the St. Joseph Parish Center. The buffet-style dinner, served from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., will consist of fried chicken, chicken and dumplings, chicken and dressing, mashed potatoes, corn, slaw, dessert, tea and coffee.

Cost is $9 for adults and $5 for children ages 6 through 12; there is no charge for children 5 years old and younger. Carryouts will be available. The Council of Catholic Women will sell crafts, breads and sweets.

Auxiliary hosts linen sale

The Saint Francis Medical Center Auxiliary will host a linen sale from 7 to 11 a.m.

Thursday in the center's lower level elevator area. Merchandise includes used blankets, sheets, pillow cases, towels, footies, pads, gowns, etc. at discounted prices. All items have been thoroughly laundered.

Heart and health screenings offered

Heart and health screenings will be available from 7 to 10 a.m. March 18 at the Saint Francis Health and Wellness Center, entrance 8. Offered are a lipid profile plus glucose for $29, which includes total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, triglycerides, cardio risk ratio plus glucose for diabetes tests. The health screening includes a free blood pressure screening, a $6 glucose screening and a $25 women's osteoporosis screening. More information is available by calling 573-331-5970.

Lung cancer screenings offered

Saint Francis Medical Center on March 19 will provide free lung cancer screenings to people ages 50 to 74 who are heavy smokers, former smokers or otherwise at risk. The screenings will be performed with low-radiation CT scan technology, and those screened will be notified of results within one week. No preparation is required; patients must be preregistered. FFA breakfast in Delta

Delta Future Farmers of America will host an all-you-can-eat breakfast from 7 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the Delta High School Cafeteria. The menu will include sausage, bcon, eggs, biscuits ang gravy, milk, juice and coffee. Donations will be accepted. In the event of inclement weather, the breakfast will take place March 14.
