City animal shelter open for adoptions alternate Saturdays

Volunteers from the Animal Welfare Alliance will staff the Poplar Bluff, Mo., Animal Shelter on alternating Saturdays for people to adopt pets. No drop-off animals will be accepted on Saturdays. The shelter will be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on alternating Saturdays through March. For more information, call the shelter at 573-686-8635.

Free GED classes

Free GED classes are now available in Marble Hill, Mo. Classroom space is limited and will be allotted on a first-come, first-served basis. Interested students should call the Cape Girardeau Adult Learning Center at 334-3669 or 238-2173.

Nominations sought for the annual Missouri History Teacher of the Year Award

The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History is seeking nominations for the annual Missouri History Teacher of the Year Award. The Missouri winner will receive a $1,000 honorarium and will be in the running for the National History Teacher of the Year award to be selected this fall. The winners's school library will receive a core archive of history books and materials. The nomination deadline is March 27.
