Free training for high school journalism advisers

The American Society of Newspaper Editors is seeking 175 teachers to attend the Reynolds High School Journalism Institute, taking place at five universities across the nation, without cost to the teacher or high school. A brochure and application are available at hsj.org. Postmark deadline for applications is March 2. Training will be July 12 to 24 at the University of Missouri, Columbia.

Individuals in support of the animal advocate group, the Rainbow Ranch project (particularly Recycling Rover, the adoption segment) can show support with a vote at the ZOOTOO.com shelter makeover contest. ZOOTOO, an animal advocacy website, is holding the contest to help raise awareness for needy animals and increase adoptions. Winner will receive a million dollar shelter makeover. Rainbow Ranch Project administrator, debi Baker, was featured in Feb. 8 Good Times for her effort in providing food for needy animals of the Cape Girardeau and Bollinger counties Stray Projects.

All-you-can-eat fish throughout Lent

The Scott City First Assembly of God will host all-you-can-eat fish from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday Feb. 27, and every Friday throughout Lent at the church, 312 Dearborn St. in Scott City. Meal includes fried fish, potatoes, baked beans, cole slaw, hush puppies, coffee and tea. Children 5 and younger eat free. Carry outs will be available. For more information, call 573-264-2365.

Doctor/Lawyer basketball game upcoming

Tickets are on sale for the 16th annual doctor/lawyer basketball showdown at 5 p.m. (doors open at 4) March 14 at the Cape Girardeau Central High School gym. Proceeds benefit the Community Counseling Center Foundation to provide special needs of those with mental, emotional and behavioral disorders. The Community Counseling Center is a private, not-for-profit comprehensive mental health-care center providing services to children, adults, families. The event includes competition between area doctors and lawyers, special half-time entertainment by students of the Academy of Dance Arts and a post-game party with food and a silent auction. Tickets may be purchased just for the game or the game and post-game party held at The Marquette Terrace, 7th Floor, 338 Broadway. Tickets are available at the counseling center, Cape County Medical Society, Capaha Bank branches in Cape Girardeau and Jackson or at the door.
