The Fort D historic site in Cape Girardeau will be the location of this year's Spring Muster from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The Spring Muster features re-enactments of colonial soldier drills. Soldiers dusting off their equipment, firing cannons, cleaning and firing their rifles, and practicing the rudiments of drill are part of the re-enactment. Civilian ladies will also be demonstrating cast iron cookery techniques and will be serving hot tea for visitors.
Local organization Preserve Missouri is hosting a community fair Saturday at Washington Park in Cape Girardeau. Individuals will get to tour the Sherwood-Minton House, one of the oldest homes in Cape Girardeau. Guests will have the chance to look inside and look for the tunnels that were used to transport the bodies to Old Lorimier Cemetery. Children can enjoy hamburgers, hot dogs, snow cones, cotton candy and soft drinks. A band will play on the front porch from 6 to 9 p.m. Admission to the event is $5 and will go toward the rehabilitation of the Sherwood-Minton House.
Old Town Cape will host a downtown historic home and garden tour from noon to 4 p.m. May 8. Five homes and two gardens will be showcased during the tour, with the owners of each home and garden giving a guided tour, highlighting special features and historic facts. Tickets for the tour are $15 in advance and are available at Old Town Cape, Annie Laurie's Antiques and Spanish Street Mercantile.
