Dentists will buy Halloween candy

Dentists Patrick and Janet Ruopp will buy Halloween candy of trick-or-treaters for $1 per pound from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. Monday at their office at 1818 Broadway in Cape Girardeau. The effort is part of Operation Gratitude, which combines contributions to compile individual care packages with goods such as personal hygiene items, letters or cards of thanks, scarves and more that are sent to military personnel. Delta senior citizens to meet Wednesday

The Delta Senior Citizens will meet at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Delta Community Center. The program will include honoring and recognizing senior veterans. William Walker, a former Marine and representative of the Marine Corps League, will speak. Musical entertainment will be provided by John Schott, and lunch will be served at noon. U.S. Colored Troops to be honored

At least 14 Civil War veterans, who served with the United States Colored Troops and enlisted from Cape Girardeau or who settled in the area after the war, are buried in Fairmount Cemetery in Cape Girardeau. A living history event will take place from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Nov. 8 at the cemetery's section C, near the northernmost block of Caruthers Avenue, before the Dunklin Street intersection. Volunteers will be posted throughout the cemetery to share information about the life, service and families of each of 14 veterans.

Magnolia Manor taking reservations

Magnolia Manor in Cairo, Illinois, now is accepting reservations for its Holiday House luncheons, which will be Nov. 30 through Dec. 5. Cost of $25 per person includes a sit-down meal and a tour of the house decorated for Christmas. Reservations will be accepted through Nov. 13. Those interested are asked to call (618) 734-3200, ext. 206, for reservations before mailing payment, and to include a self-addressed, stamped envelope with payment. Reservations will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis; seating is limited. Nonrefundable tickets will be mailed after payment is received, and attendees are asked to arrive between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. The house will be open for tours from 1 to 4 p.m. Nov. 30 through Dec 5.

Farrar church to host turkey, ham supper

The annual turkey and ham supper hosted by the Salem Men's Club will be from 3:30 to 7 p.m. Nov. 8 at Salem Lutheran School in Farrar, Missouri. The cost of the meal is $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 6 through 12. Carryouts will be available. The Salem Ladies Aid will have a country store.

Free screenings for veterans

Saint Francis Medical Center will offer free heart and health screenings for all veterans on Veterans Day, Nov. 11. Screenings will take place in the Health and Wellness Center conference rooms at Fitness Plus, 150 S. Mount Auburn Road, Entrance 8. Screenings will include the following measurements: blood pressure, total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, triglycerides, cardiac risk assessment and glucose for diabetes. For accurate results, a 10- to 12-hour fast is required. Medications may be taken with water during fasting. Appointment times are limited; registration is available by calling (573) 331-3996.
