Walk to raise awareness of apraxia

Tara Foulk of Jackson is coordinating the Southeast Missouri Walk for Children with Apraxia of Speech event to take place Oct. 18 at Cape County Park. All proceeds will benefit important apraxia programs and research of the Childhood Apraxia of Speech Association of North America.

Childhood Apraxia of Speech is a very challenging and complicated neurological speech disorder. This makes it difficult or impossible for children to accurately produce sounds, syllables, or words despite having a good understanding of language. The Walk for Children with Apraxia of Speech is held across the country as a means to heighten awareness and funding.

The walk is open to adults and children. On-site registration and check-in begin at 9 a.m. with the walk at 10 a.m.

More information is available by emailing tlf515@yahoo.com or visiting secure.apraxia-kids.org/semissouriwalk.

Blood donors offered incentives

Several area blood donation opportunities have been announced by the The American Red Cross.

Blood donations often decline during the winter holidays when school is not in session. The Red Cross is offering 16- to 24-year-old students now enrolled a way to help overcome the seasonal decline and to have a chance to win a college scholarship. Students who sponsor a successful blood drive between Dec. 15 and Jan. 15 through the Leaders Save Lives program will be entered to win a college scholarship and will receive a gift card.

Those who attempt to donate in October will be entered to win a $5,000 Visa gift card, courtesy of Suburban Propane.
