Blood donations often decline between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day as people become busy with holiday activities. Blood donation appointments may be made through the Red Cross Blood Donor App, which is free and available for download in app stores. Local historian Denise Lincoln will discuss slaves from Cape Girardeau who enlisted to fight in the Civil War at 2 p.m. Nov. 5 at the Cape Girardeau Public Library, 711 N. Clark St. The talk, entitled, "From Slaves to Soldiers: Civil War U.S. Colored Troops from Southeast Missouri," will take place in the Oscar Hirsch Room.
Ellen Shuck, Southeast Missourian columnist, author and teacher, will speak at 10 a.m. Nov. 8 in the Oscar Hirsch Room of the Cape Girardeau Public Library, 711 N. Clark St. Shuck will provide a motivational talk about ways to deal with and overcome struggle. It is based on her new inspirational book "Wisdom For The Journey."
