Kentucky bus trip scheduled Nov. 8

The Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department is hosting a bus trip to Grand Rivers, Kentucky, on Nov. 8.

Leaving at 9 a.m. from the Osage Centre, the charter bus will arrive in time for an 11:30 a.m. lunch at Mr. Bill's restaurant, an extension to Patti's 1880's Settlement restaurant. The trip includes a matinee performance of the Christmas Spectacular at Badgett Playhouse and time to explore the area's shops and sites.

Cost is $50 per person, which does not include lunch. Space is limited. More information is available by calling 573-339-6340.

'Messiah' choir seeks volunteers

Rehearsals for the 'Messiah' choir will begin at 7 p.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cape Girardeau. The choir is open to the public.

The choir will hold seven rehearsals, with two in each of the months of October, November and December and one in January. The concert will take place Jan. 18.

The choir will sing the major choruses of Handel's "Messiah," including the "Hallelujah Chorus," including a soloist.

United Way to host beer-tasting event

The United Way of Southeast Missouri will host Boos and Microbrews in partnership with Hop Heads of Southeast Missouri home-brew club and Bluff City Beer Co. from 2 to 6 p.m. in the parking lot at the corner of Broadway and Main Street in downtown Cape Girardeau.

Attendees will be able to sample from more than 60 craft and locally brewed beers and will be able to vote on their favorite. Raffle tickets for two prizes will be sold during the event, with prizes awarded at 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. Costumes are encouraged, and the best-dressed woman and man will be awarded prizes.

Tickets are $30 in advance and $35 at the gate and may be purchased at United Way of Southeast Missouri, BOLD Marketing or the John Huber Brewing Company in Fruitland. The first 350 people to enter the event tent will receive a souvenir coolie cup and bottle-opener keychain. Food will be sold by 2 sides Grillin, and the Jerry Ford polka band will provide music.

Health screenings set in Jackson area

Immaculate Conception Catholic Church will host stroke and osteoporosis screenings Nov. 5 at 208 S. Hope St. in Jackson.

Screenings identify potential cardiovascular conditions such as blocked arteries, irregular heart rhythm, abdominal aortic aneurysms and hardening of the arteries in the legs, which is a strong predictor of heart disease. A bone-density screening to assess osteoporosis is offered, and is appropriate for men and women.

New art exhibit at Altenburg museum

ALTENBURG, Mo. -- The Lutheran Heritage Center and Museum, 75 Church St. in Altenburg, is featuring the art of Kurt Mueller of Minneapolis, Minnesota, through Nov. 7.

The exhibit -- "Revision: Recovery, Repair, and Transformation" -- includes sculptures, paintworks and assemblages and a detailed narrative of the artist's journey.

Mueller is the fifth generation-descendant of the 1839 German-Lutheran immigration to Perry County, Missouri.

Halloween storytelling at Bollinger Mill

BURFORDVILLE, Mo. -- Bollinger Mill State Historic Site will hold its annual storytelling event at 7 p.m. Friday. Marilyn Kinsella, a professional storyteller, will present her stories around a bonfire at this free event sponsored by the Missouri State Parks. Visitors are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket for seating.

Kinsella began her storytelling career in 1981, while teaching in the St. Louis area. She worked as a storyteller and puppeteer at the Edwardsville, Illinois, Public Library for 16 years. Since her retirement in 2002, Kinsella has worked full-time as a professional storyteller in the St. Louis area and the Southern Illinois region.

Bollinger Mill State Historic Site is the site of a Civil War-era mill where visitors can learn how corn and wheat were ground into meal and flour by water power, just as it was done long ago. Burfordville Covered Bridge, the oldest of the four remaining covered bridges in the state, was built in 1858 and stretches 140 feet across the Whitewater River, which powers the mill.

Benefit to help build church in Russia

International Cooperating Ministries will host a free dinner banquet at 6 p.m. Oct. 24 at Ray's Plaza Banquet Center to help raise funds to help build a church in Russia.

Singer and songwriter Ryan Corn, a Cape Girardeau native, will perform. Guest speaker will be Matthew Hartsfield, pastor of Van Dyke Church in Lutz, Florida, one of the largest and fastest-growing United Methodist Churches in the United States; he is author of "Shouting at Jesus: Unleash an Impolite Faith."

A free-will offering will be accepted, with 100 percent of donated funds going toward construction of a church in Russia and a 50 percent matching gift. For each $1 given, $1.50 will go to the building fund. ICM is a trans-denominational ministry founded in 1987 that by end of 2014 will have built 5,000 churches in 68 countries, an email from ICM said.

MissionFest set Nov. 2 at Osage Centre

MissionFest 2014 will be held 2 to 5 p.m. Nov. 2 at The Osage Centre on Kingshighway in Cape Girardeau.

The purpose of the event, according to a flyer from organizers, is to allow people to learn about local and international mission opportunities and to allow churches to share information about their missions.

Attendees are asked to bring hygiene products, baby items, non-perishable food items and cleaning supplies that will be donated to local charities.

Area church youth groups are asked to bring a shoe box for Operation Christmas Child, a charitable effort of Samaritan's Purse, a nondenominational evangelical Christian organization providing aid worldwide. Each member of the group that brings the most boxes will receive a $10 Rhodes gift card.

'Pink' picnic set Thursday

SoutheastHEALTH will host the "Bravest Wear Pink" community picnic in support of breast cancer awareness from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Thursday at Shawnee Park Center in Cape Girardeau.

Participants will be able to meet with police and fire/rescue officers of the city of Cape Girardeau. Police and fire vehicles will be displayed.

The picnic will include complimentary sandwiches, chips, cookies and beverages.
