The Alzheimer's Association gave the Southeast Missouri Hospital Foundation a $5,000 grant to purchase items for Chris' ARK, part of the Alzheimer's Comfort Cart at the hospital. Chris' ARK (Alzheimer's Resource Kit) was inspired by Christopher Talley, a Southeast Missouri Hospital chief nurse anesthetist who was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and died in 2008. Chris' ARK kits contain items to help caregivers and Alzheimer's patients. The foundation has given away more than 30 kits. For more information or to get a kit, call the hospital foundation at 986-6624.
Birdwatchers are invited to take part in the 13th annual Great Backyard Bird Count Feb. 12 to 15. Participants count birds that appear in their backyards, local parks and wildlife refuges for as little as 15 minutes to as long as they want on one or more days of the event. Sightings are submitted online at www.birdcount.org. Each checklist submitted by the volunteers helps researchers at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the National Audubon Society and Bird Studies Canada to learn more about how the birds are doing and how to protect them. Participants can win prizes including bird feeders, binoculars, books and CDs. For more information, visit www.birdcount.org.
