The Cape Girardeau Public Library will host Family Fun Night for families with children 5 years and older from 6 to 8 p.m. Jan. 14. Wii and Xbox 360 game consoles and board games will be available for families. This event is free and open to the public.
Among many other things, the Ag Expo 2011 will feature a turkey calling contest for youths and adults. This nonsanctioned contest will have three age groups: 10 and younger, 11- to 17-year-olds and 18 and older. Contestants will have 90 seconds to call and will be judged on gobble, cluck, fly down and purr. The Ag Expo 2011 will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Jan. 21 and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 22 at the Black River Coliseum in Poplar Bluff, Mo. There will be 118 booths about agriculture and the outdoors. Admission is free. The turkey calling contest will be at 1:30 p.m. Jan. 22. There's no registration fee, and participants can sign up from 12:30 to 1:20 p.m. Jan. 22. Celebrate Recovery will hold its first meeting of the year at 6 p.m. Monday at the Fruitland Community Church. Celebrate Recovery meets every Monday evening at the church. A meal will be served from 6 to 6:30 p.m. followed by large-group and small-group times. Celebrate Recovery is a program that was launched 14 years ago to help those struggling with hurts, habits and hang-ups. The meetings are free and open to the public.
On Jan. 31 the AARP will begin training volunteers to provide free federal and state tax return counseling and basic income tax return preparation. The AARP mission is to provide free assistance to senior citizens, low-income residents and others who need help filing out their tax return. AARP will provide all training and materials. The PTO of the Oak Ridge School District will host a chili/stew supper from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Jan. 21. All proceeds will go toward special purchases for the district. Ticket are $5; children younger than 5 eat free when accompanied by an adult with a ticket. Diners will be served a choice of chili or stew, a hot dog, dessert and drink.
