Illmo Baptist Church to host block party

Illmo Baptist Church will host a block party from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. today, Sept. 18, at the church, 802 2nd St. in Scott City. The event will include games, food and live music from the group Blend. The block party is free and open to all.

Hope Seeds to participate in giving challenge

Hope Seeds Inc. is once again participating in the Community Foundation of Sarasota County giving challenge. Each donation will be matched two for one for new donors and one for one for returning donors. The challenge is an online event from 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20, to 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21. The Best Years Active Living Expo planned

The Best Years Active Living Expo will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21, in the Isle Casino Event Center, 777 N. Main St. in Cape Girardeau. The free one-day event is designed for adults who embrace a healthy and active lifestyle. Attendees can experience fly-fishing demonstrations from the Missouri Department of Conservation, dancing and live music from the Jerry Ford Combo, a social media seminar by rustmedia experts, interactive displays about health and wellness and much more.

Flu shots to be given

The Scott County Health Department will give flu shots at the following locations with no appointment necessary:

  • 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21, at Morley Baptist Church, 221 S. Stephenson in Morley, Missouri.
  • 9 to 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 23, at Kelso C-7 School, 1016 State Highway A in New Hamburg, Missouri.
  • 9 to 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 30, at the Chaffee Nutrition Center, 800 S. Main St. in Chaffee, Missouri.
  • 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19, at the St. Denis Parish Center, Highway 61 in Benton, Missouri.
  • 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, at the Oaks Senior Center, 305 Cresap St. in Sikeston, Missouri.

The flu shots will cost $20, or $10 for those 18 and younger. Medicaid and Medicare will be accepted. Flu shots also are available by appointment every Thursday at the Health Department office, 102 Grove Estates Court in Sikeston. For more information or to make an appointment, call (573) 471-4044.

Bollinger County Fall Festival scheduled

The Bollinger County Fair Association will host its Fall Festival Thursday through Saturday, Sept. 22 through 24, at the Marble Hill Ball Park, Highway 34 in Marble Hill, Missouri. The event will include carnival rides all three days, vendors, crafts, food, games and more. A concert featuring an Elvis impersonator and Classy Chassy will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday, and Gospel Night will begin at 6 p.m. Friday. A parade will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, and the festival will open at 11 a.m. A chicken and dumplings dinner will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Senior Citizen Nutrition Center, 505 3rd St. A car show also will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Twin City Park. Cougars for a Cure 5K to be held

The sixth annual Cougars for a Cure 5K run/walk and kids fun run will begin at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, at the Kelso Ballpark. Parking will be available at St. Augustine School, 230 Messmer St. in Kelso, Missouri. Attendees are encouraged to park at the school and walk to the ballpark. Entry fees cost $20 in advance for the 5K, $25 on race day for the 5K and $10 for the kids fun run. Packet pickup will be from 3:30 to 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23, and from 7:30 to 8:15 a.m. on race day at the ballpark.

Scott City disc golf tournament planned

The third annual Scott City Area Chamber of Commerce disc golf tournament will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, at Scott City Park on Ruth Street in Scott City. Registration is $25 in advance or $30 the day of the event. Those wishing to participate may contact Connie at (573) 339-9881, ext. 20360.

Fall cemetery walk set

A free fall cemetery walk will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, at Bollinger Mill State Historic Site, 113 Bollinger Mill Road in Burfordville. The event will include a tour of the Bollinger family cemetery and will provide a glimpse into the lives of the family members buried there through family letters and other documents. Attendees should meet the tour guide on the mill porch and are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing and footwear. Preregistration is required for the event; call (573) 243-4591.

St. Joseph to host parish dinner

St. Joseph Parish will host a dinner from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 25, at the church, 33921 Highway 91 in Advance, Missouri. The meal will include fried chicken, kettle beef, chicken and dumplings, homemade bread and desserts. Tickets will cost $10 for adults and $5 for children.

Immanuel Lutheran Church dinner planned

Immanuel Lutheran Church of Tilsit will host a dinner at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 25, at the church, 496 State Highway F in Jackson. The meal will include kettle beef, chicken and dumplings and ham. The cost is $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 6 to 12 and free for children 5 and younger. Carryouts will be available. A portion of the dinner's proceeds will go to the Saxony Lutheran High School Debt Service Account.

Plaque to be displayed at Old McKendree

Doris Dace of Pocahontas, Missouri, a member of New McKendree United Methodist Church, recently accepted a plaque recognizing Old McKendree Chapel as one of the churches in the Missouri Annual Conference for being more than 200 years old. The plaque was presented by the newly elected bishop of the MAC, the Rev. Bob Farr. Farr said the churches being recognized for being more than 200 years old predate the formation of the conference itself. The plaque will be on display at the annual Old McKendree Day service at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 25, on the grounds of Old McKendree Chapel on Bainbridge Road in Jackson. The service will be outside and the public is invited to attend and to bring lawn chairs for comfort. Barefoot on Sunday will provide the music, and the Rev. Lyle Johnston will be the guest speaker.

Breast cancer poker run scheduled

The SEMO Harley Owners Group will host its annual cancer poker run, the "Breast Poker Run Ever," at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, at Lawless Harley Davidson, 2100 E. Outer Road in Scott City. The first bike out will be at 11 a.m. Each bike will cost $15 to participate, or $20 with a passenger. The run is open to all motor vehicles, in addition to motorcycles. Annual Cancer Gala to be held

The 30th annual American Cancer Society Gala will be held Saturday, Oct. 8, at the Cape Girardeau Regional Airport Hangar, 860 Limbaugh Drive in Cape Girardeau. The event will include luxury cars and planes, Champagne, live music by Groovethang and special guest and Jackson native Mervelless Mark Kamp, an award-winning Las Vegas motivational speaker, author and entertainer. There also will be a silent auction. Money raised at the gala will go toward research, patient progress, patient services, patients' families and other needs. Registration open for SEMO Rainmakers

Registration for the SEMO Rainmakers Youth basketball league for children in kindergarten through sixth grade is open now. Early online or mail-in registration will run through Oct. 16. The cost is $70, or $55 if more than two children are being registered. Between noon and 3 p.m. on Oct. 8, there will be a walk-in registration day at the Jackson Area Chamber of Commerce, 125 E. Main St. in Jackson. Late online or mail-in registration will be from Oct. 17 through Nov. 16. The cost is $80, or $65 if more than two children are being registered.
