The Jackson Elks will host an Elks Soccer Shoot beginning at 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 29, through Thursday, Sept. 1, at Jackson City Park, Highway 61 North in Jackson. Children ages 7 and younger will compete Monday; children ages 8 and 9 will compete Tuesday; children ages 10 to 15 will compete Wednesday; and children who were unable to make the others dates will compete on Thursday. The event is free, and children's ages are determined by their age as of Aug. 1. Awards will be given for first, second and third place in each age group. First place winners will go on to districts, which are planned for Sept. 25 at the park. District winners will go on to compete on Oct. 7 and 8 in Jefferson City, Missouri. The American Red Cross Southeast Missouri Chapter will host a home fire prevention campaign beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at the Jackson Civic Center, 381 E. Deerwood Drive in Jackson. The Red Cross is partnering with the Jackson and Fruitland fire departments to assist area residents who wish to have smoke alarms installed in their homes. The second annual Cape West Rotary Duck Regatta will begin at 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, in the lazy river at Cape Splash, 1565 N. Kingshighway in Cape Girardeau. The first race, the Big Quacker Adult Race, will begin at 4:15 p.m. and will be for those ages 13 and older. The second race, the Big Chief Business Battle Race, will begin at 4:45 p.m. and will be for area businesses. The final race, the Duck Wild Kids Race, will begin at 5:15 p.m. and will be for children 12 and younger. Ducks will be available to buy for the adult and kid races at $5 per duck or $25 for six. The corporate ducks will cost $100, and the business gets to decorate and retain the duck. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Special Olympics and the Cape West Rotary Foundation.
