Furry 5K to benefit pet therapy program
Fitness Plus will host the eighth annual Furry 5K and One-Mile Fun Walk at 8 a.m. Saturday, June 4, at Missouri Running Co., 1720 N. Kingshighway in Cape Girardeau. A portion of proceeds will benefit the Saint Francis Medical Center Inpatient Rehabilitation pet therapy program. You do not have to have a dog to participate, but dogs are welcome on leashes. Registration is from 7 to 7:45 a.m. on race day, and results will be announced at 9 a.m. Early packet pickup is from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, June 3, at Missouri Running Co. The American Red Cross of Southeast Missouri will host an "Everyday Heroes: Celebrating the Hero Within" fundraiser luncheon from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, June 9, at the Isle Casino, 777 N. The KHIS Share-a-thon will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 11, at the KHIS radio station, 254 S. Silver Springs Road in Cape Girardeau. The event will benefit Kids Against Hunger -- Southeast Missouri, a not-for-profit organization that works to feed starving children and reduce the number of hungry children in the area. The Gibson County Fair Murder Mystery Dinner will begin at 5 p.m. Saturday, June 11, at the VFW Hall Post 3838, 1049 N. Kingsighway in Cape Girardeau. Participants are encouraged to wear Western clothing and will "fetch a posse to solve an old-fashioned 'whodunit.'" A silent auction will start at 5:30 p.m., a dinner served by the Hickory House will begin at 6:15 and the Bittersweet Band Hoedown will begin at 8:30. Simply Fitness and the Humane Society of Southeast Missouri will host the Furry Friends 5K fundraiser from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 11, starting at 2432 E. Main St. in Jackson. The Humane Society also will host an adoption event on race day, and there will be a one-mile "dog jog" for those who do not wish to run the 5K. Procter & Gamble will host the "Who Do You Run For?" 5K at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 11, at Trail of Tears State Park, 429 Moccasin Springs Road in Jackson. Registration will open at 7:30 a.m. and the race will begin at 9. Participants have the option to support more than a dozen United Way funded partners or simply the United Way with their entry fee of $20. Saint Francis Healthcare System will offer free lung cancer screenings to people ages 50 to 74 who are heavy smokers, former smokers or otherwise at risk from noon to 3:30 p.m. Thursday, June 23, at its Womancare clinic, 211 St. Francis Drive in Cape Girardeau. High-risk patients will be screened using low-radiation CT scan technology and notified of the results within one week. Preregistration is required and can be done by calling (573) 331-3996.
