The Cape Girardeau March for Babies will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 7, at Arena Park, 410 Kiwanis Drive in Cape Girardeau. The 4th annual Play for Parker Baseball Showcase will be May 7 and 8 at the Shawnee Sports Park, 1157 S. West End Blvd. in Cape Girardeau. The showcase is for children ages 9 to 14 years old, and costs $300 to enter. There is a three-game guarantee, with two games in pool play and then a single elimination tournament. There will be individual competitions, including a home run derby, a timed run around the bases and more. There will be a gate fee the first day, along with T-shirts, food and drinks for purchase. Saint Francis Healthcare System will off free stroke screenings from 7 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 3, in the Fitness Plus Multipurpose Room (Entrance 8), 150 S. Mount Auburn Road in Cape Girardeau. The screenings will include a risk assessment, blood pressure check, cholesterol testing and medical consultation. The screenings are part of Saint Francis' community education programming during May, which is National Stroke Awareness Month.
Saint Francis Medical Center will offer heart and health screenings the first and third Wednesday of every month through December. The next screening will be from 7 to 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 4, in the Saint Martha Conference Room in the Health and Wellness Center (Entrance 8 -- Fitness Plus), 150 S. Mount Auburn Road in Cape Girardeau. No appointment is necessary, and the screening will include total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, triglycerides, cardiac risk ratio, glucose and blood pressure check. A finger prick of blood will be taken, and results will be delivered within 15 minutes to the patient and the patient's primary care doctor. Cape Girardeau County residents 60 years and older can receive free screenings.
To celebrate the National Day of Prayer, the Cape Girardeau Ministerial Alliance will host a dinner from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 5, at Capaha Park, at the corner of Broadway and West End Boulevard. The community is invited to bring family and friends to enjoy a free dinner and collectively pray for the community on the National Day of Prayer.
Fitness Plus will host a Senior Health and Fitness Day from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 10, at Fitness Plus (Saint Francis Medical Center Entrance 8), 150 S. Mount Auburn Road in Cape Girardeau. A Hawaiian-themed luau health fair will be in the multipurpose room. Guests will be able to enjoy Hawaiian activities, food and festivities. Hawaiian shirts are encouraged but not required for entry. Immaculate Conception will host a golf tournament beginning at 11:30 a.m. Friday, May 13, at Kimbeland Country Club, 2175 E. Jackson Blvd. in Jackson. Lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m., with a shotgun start to begin the golf tournament at 12:30 p.m. A group of four will cost $400 ($100 per person), with skins, mulligans and red tees included. The team fee also includes green fees, access to a golf cart, lunch and the chance to win prizes. Prizes will be awarded for top finishers, as well as men's and women's longest drive and closest to the pin. All proceeds will benefit the Immaculate Conception Home and School Association. Opening day of the Shawnee Park Community Garden will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 14, outside the Shawnee Park Center, 835 S. West End Blvd. in Cape Girardeau. The event will include a free children's book, a free container garden and garden planting seeds, all while supplies last. Attendees will have access to other information on other garden events, activities and classes, and will be able to sign up to volunteer at the garden. There also will be a book signing.
A morning worship service to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Immanuel Lutheran Church of Jackson (Tilsit) will be at 8:45 a.m. Sunday, May 15, at the church, 496 State Highway F in Jackson. The Rev. Dale Meyer will be the guest speaker, and an anniversary dinner will be held after the service. A 150th anniversary booklet will be available for $10. A "Better Health Better Woman: Women's Health Event" hosted by Saint Francis Medical Center will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday, May 19, at the Isle Casino, 777 N. Main St. in Cape Girardeau. Check-in will begin at 5 p.m. and the speaker sessions will begin at 6 p.m. Women's health issues will be discussed, food and drinks will be available, a variety of local vendors will be present and door prizes will be given away at the end of the night.
