What had been water running and falling loudly from a pond drain pipe during the day became a quiet surreal scene during the night. I found this picturesque ice sculpture made by Mother Nature the next morning.
No water was exiting the cold steel pipe. Everything in this photo that looks like water is in fact ice. The discolored area is frozen foam. Tree roots at the pool edge are covered in frozen mist that collected on them while water was still falling into the pool after air temperatures fell below 32 degrees Fahrenheit, freezing the exposed roots. As the night air temperatures fell to near zero, the water falling from the pipe slowed to a trickle and froze in a cascade that looks like flowing water. When ice formed thickly enough at the upper end of the pipe, the water coming out of the pond stopped completely and everything was frozen in time.
