Honors, achievements

* Meg Goodman, a student at Cape Girardeau Central High School and Melissa Leonard, a student at Meadow Heights High School, each received the 2010 Outstanding Achievement in Citizenship Award. Goodman and Leonard are two of 15 public high school students to receive the award from the State Board of Education.

* Meg Goodman and Josh Wen, students at Cape Girardeau Central High School, and Sydney Stein, a student at Jackson High School, are Missouri Scholars 100 honorees. The students will be honored Sunday in Columbia, Mo. The award is sponsored by the Missouri Association of Secondary School Principals.

* Kelley Kasten of Jackson was named to the fall dean's list at Webster University in St. Louis.

* Reine Yamnitz, a senior at Perryville High School and the Perryville Area Career Center, received the Thomas B. and Helen W. Sanders Scholarship. Yamnitz plans to double major in agriculture education and welding. She was also named Perryville Area Career and Technology Tech Prep Student of the Year.

* Mia Pohlman, a senior at Perryville High School, received the John T. Belcher and the Southeast Missouri Superintendent Association scholarships. Districts in the Missouri School Boards' Association nominate students for the Belcher scholarship, which is given to 16 regional and one statewide winners.

* Alex Hunt, Joey Withrow and Dakota Broeker, seniors at the Perryville Area Career Center, received 2010 Imagine America Scholarships. Hunt plans attend WyoTech in Laramie, Wyo. Withrow plans to enroll at Nashville Auto Diesel College in Nashville, Tenn., and Broeker plans to attend WyoTech in Orlando, Fla.

COMPETITIONS

Academic teams from Saxony Lutheran High School, Notre Dame Regional High School and Cape Girardeau Central High School will advance to the next round of competition in the Missouri State High School Activities Association's tournament. On Saturday, Cape Girardeau Central High School's Central Intelligence Agency beat North County Central High School in the district championship at the school in Bonne Terre, Mo. Team members Josh Wen and Prithvi Rudrappa also made the all-district team. The team will continue with sectional competition today. Notre Dame students beat Malden High School at the district championship in New Madrid, Mo. Saxony Lutheran students beat Iberia High School at the district championship in Iberia, Mo. As they go on to sectional competition, the teams are the top 16 in their class in the state.
