SIKESTON -- With the deadline to nominate honorees for the Sikeston R-6 Hall of Fame and Honor Wall approaching, one of the program's founders urges community members to not hesitate in making their recommendations.
"To me, it's a great honor to be nominated," said co-founder Roger Sherman of the Honor Wall/Hall of Fame. "It's recognition of their achievement while in school, and it reinforces the fact we do have a good program -- both education- and activity-wise."
In 1995, Sherman, who spent 36 years in the Sikeston School District as a coach, teacher and administrator, and about 30 to 40 members of the community met one evening for a few hours to discuss a way of acknowledging the men and women who have contributed to the Sikeston public schools. They created the Honor Wall and Hall of Fame, which is reflected with plaques at the Sikeston Field House.
The Sikeston Public Schools Honor Wall recognizes individuals for their service to the school district. The Hall of Fame, on the other hand, honors individuals and teams that have made outstanding and lasting contributions in the field of athletics or school activities. Sikeston High School students cannot be nominated until five years after their graduation.
Nomination forms are available online at www.sikestonr6.org or at the Sikeston High School office or the Central Office 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
Completed nominations may be dropped off at the central office or mailed to Sikeston R-6 Central Office, 1002 Virginia, Sikeston, MO 63801. Nominations must be postmarked by Friday.
