Team dreams: Father, son play big roles in Chaffee's rejuvenated football program

Chaffee football is in a different place this year, and two generations of Horrells are playing a big role. Aaron Horrell, now a senior at Chaffee High School, made his first varsity start at quarterback when the Red Devils opened the season Friday at Grandview in Jefferson County. Brian Horrell, Aaron's father will be on the sidelines, where he has been for 17 seasons, though now as an assistant coach to Charlie Vickery. The Red Devils will be trying to follow last year's breakthrough 6-4 season with another winning campaign and perhaps the school's first playoff berth since the 1983 state championship season, when Brian Horrell was a member of the team.

Boyd moves on to next round of "America's Got Talent"

At a community watch party Tuesday, fans of Sikeston native Neal E. Boyd gathered in the University Center of Southeast Missouri State University to watch Boyd's performance. The tenor performed Tuesday night, singing an opera-infused rendition of the song "Somewhere" from the musical "West Side Story." He was one of 10 performers to sing or dance on that episode. Wednesday night the acts were called in pairs to be either eliminated or pushed through to the next round. Boyd walked up with Britney Spears impersonator Derrick Barry and was told he would be going on to the next round. Boyd's next appearance will likely come in two weeks, when the field of 40 is reduced to 20. Matthew Piazzi, a New Yorker with ties to Cape Girardeau, will perform on Tuesday's show.
