MARSHALL, Mo. -- At the turn of the 19th century, amateur and famous actors alike staged performances at the opera house that once dominated a corner of downtown Marshall. The building was used by public schools for commencement ceremonies and was a center for political meetings and speeches.
Although politicians no longer walk the halls of the opera house -- which is said to have burned down after 30 years of existence -- with the advent of Marshall Cinema, people may once again flock downtown to hear commentary from key speakers.
In two weeks, the cinema will host past presidential candidate and TV and radio personality Alan Keyes.
Organizers hope to offer similar events in the future.
"I want to have speakers a couple of times a year," Kim Thompson of Marshall Cinema said. "[The purpose] is not only political speakers, he just happens to be a political speaker."
As republicans are in the midst of the 2012 presidential primary season, Keyes may discuss key political topics. However, it's anticipated he will speak on morals, family and the home.
The event is scheduled at 6 p.m. Jan. 20. Admission is $12 per seat, and tickets can be purchased during regular business hours at Marshall Cinema beginning Friday, Jan. 6. Thompson can also be reached at 660-815-7404 should ticket buyers need to arrange a time for purchase.
