"Come and see."

With those words, photojournalist Linda Schaefer was invited to enter the world of Mother Teresa.

Schaefer captured that world through her photographs and journal entries, published in a 138-page book.

Next week, Schaefer will be in Cape Girardeau to discuss her experiences with Mother Teresa at the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women's annual spring assembly.

The assembly, which draws Catholic women from as far away as Joplin, Mo., and other towns across the bottom half of the state, will begin Friday at Drury Lodge.

Springfield-Cape Girardeau Diocese's Bishop John Leibrecht will speak Friday afternoon, followed by Schaefer discussing her time in Calcutta, India, with Mother Teresa.

The event also features a banquet with entertainment by the Immaculate Conception Church Chorus from Jackson. Other guest speakers include the Rev. Scott Sunnennberg from Sikeston, Mo.

The theme for this year's event is "We are God's people."

Joan Eggimann of Cape Girardeau has attended the annual event for the past 20 years.

"I like the fellowship of seeing all these friends who live so far away," said Eggimann, who also serves as president of the council.

A member of the council heard Schaefer at a national convention in Atlanta, Ga., and thought the photojournalist would be well-received in at the local event.

She has worked for CNN and her work has appeared in New York Times, Newsweek and Parade Magazine. Schaefer lives in Atlanta.
