Daughters of the American Revolution

The Oct. 21 meeting of the John Guild Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, was held at the Riverside Regional Library in Jackson. Regent Marti Strickland presided.

Member Morgan Lake, State Regent, was recognized with applause as well as member Lorilee Short who is State Corresponding Secretary.

Following the opening ritual and reports from chapter officers and chairmen, a program was presented by members who had recently toured four of the six DAR Schools. Members visited schools in Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky and South Carolina.

Especially dear to the hearts of Missouri Daughters is the Tamassee DAR School in South Carolina. They maintain Groves Cottage, a group home for young boys. The cottage was dedicated in 1958 to honor Missouri Native and President General Mrs. Frederick Groves. Mrs. Groves was from Cape Girardeau and a member of the Nancy Hunter Chapter, NSDAR.

Since 1903, DAR has been helping children in remote mountain areas receive education. The DAR contributes more than $1 million annually to support six schools that provide for a variety of special student needs.

President Joyce Hays presided.

A thank you note was received from Linda Belote.

A tentative trip to Ste. Genevieve's renovated hotel is being planned for October 24th. Bobbie Woodard will check with members the week of the 24th.

The decision was made to collect 50 cents from members not wearing their Beta Sigma Phi badge to the meetings.

Patty Taylor announced plans for the all chapter fall dinner. It will be held at Delmonico's in Jackson on November 16th. The RSVP date is November 2nd.

The Swaparoo Gift was brought by Bernie Gardner and won by Charlotte Bess.

The next meeting will be held at the home of Gwen Nussbaum on October 26th.

The evenings program was presented by Dixie Jones. It consisted of each members "favorite part" of the Beta Sigma Phi Missouri State Convention held in Cape Girardeau over the weekend; 228 members attended. It was very enlightening to revisit the Convention from all the chapter members' prospective and it was very nice to meet and visit with Laura Ross Wingfield from our International Office in Kansas City. Laura is the granddaughter of the founder of Beta Sigma Phi, Walter W. Ross. We all agreed that our hard work for the Sunday mornings "Mary Poppins" theme and our Convention Closing Ceremony was well worth the hard work of every member of our Chapter.
