Lynwood Baptist Church calls transitional pastor

Lynwood Baptist Church of Cape Girardeau welcomes the Rev. Jim Hylton as transitional minister with Sunday's service. Hylton is a graduate of Southwest Missouri State University. He has pastored a number of churches in Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas. His ministry spans more than 50 years with crusades and conferences around the world, including India, Taiwan, Australia, South Korea, South Africa, Botswana, New Zealand and Canada. He served on the Board of Advisers for Promise Keepers in Texas and co-founded Fullness Magazine. He is founder of City Vision, which ministers to youth and homeless, the co-founder of Cornerstone Assistance Network in Oklahoma City, founder and publisher of CareAmerica Magazine, and author of two books, "Just Dying to Live" and "Just Sittin' Pretty." Hylton and his wife, Jane, are natives of southern Missouri. He most recently pastored in Edmond, Okla., a northern suburb of Oklahoma City. Lynwood Baptist Church is at 2935 Lynwood Hills Drive, Cape Girardeau.

Jackson student attends keyboard festival

Anna Miller of Jackson, a student of Lacie Eades of Scott City, participated in one of the Missouri Baptist Keyboard Festivals recently held in nine locations around the state. More than 100 students participated this year. Each student was required to play a hymn, a recital piece and scales based on their category. Upper-level students were also required to sight-read a hymn and play the accompaniment from a selected choir anthem.

Illmo Baptist Church in revival this week

The Illmo Baptist Church in Scott City will be in revival Sunday through Wednesday. Rick Biesiadecki of Defiance, Mo., a missionary and church planning strategist for the Missouri Baptist convention, will be the speaker. Services begin at 10:55 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Sunday. They will continue at 7 p.m. Monday through Wednesday. Dinner will be served at 6 p.m. Wednesday. Rodney and Debbie Davis of the Morley Baptist Church will lead the music. The church is at 802 Second St. in Scott City; pastor is Bob Herring.

St. Andrew Lutheran marks 50th anniversary

St. Andrew Lutheran Church is celebrating its 50th anniversary during the 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. services May 6. The St. Andrew Adult Choir will be featured. Special anthems will be sung and recognition of past choir members will be celebrated. The public is invited to attend these special celebrations of choral music at the church, 804 North Cape Rock Drive.

Jackson group to sing at Calvary Church

The Rivermen of Jackson will sing at 10:30 a.m. May 6 at Calvary Community Church, 213 West Victor St. in Poplar Bluff, Mo. The Rivermen began preparing songs for the morning worship service in 2002 at First Baptist Church in Jackson. In the past five years the group has sung at more than 300 concerts, performing about 70 a year, and recorded five CDs.

  • New McKendree United Methodist Bell Choir will perform in the sanctuary of First Christian Church at 6:30 p.m.; a light supper will be available at 6 p.m.
  • "The Secret Place" workshop weekend, 10 a.m., Christ Church of the Heartland, featuring Jason Upton, singer and songwriter.
  • First Baptist Church in Cape Girardeau, midweek Bible study at 6:15 p.m. with Dr. Ron Winstead "General Epistles" series 1 Peter 2.

Thursday

  • Cape Girardeau and Jackson-area churches observe National Day of Prayer beginning at 6 a.m. at Cape First, 254 S. Silver Springs Road for breakfast and prayer at 7 a.m., followed by noon prayer at Jackson First Baptist and an evening prayer service at 7 p.m. at St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Cape.
  • The Ministerial Alliance in Scott City is sponsoring a short noon prayer meeting at the Scott City Courthouse on Main Street in honor of National Day of Prayer. Several local pastors will offer prayer.
