Saint Francis receives honors for volunteer services

The Saint Francis Medical Center Auxiliary in Cape Girardeau earned honors for its volunteer services as an auxiliary with 151 to 300 members. From June 2010 through May 2011, 237 auxiliary members volunteered 58,000 hours and contributed $180,000 to the hospital. In April, the auxiliary announced its pledge of $800,000 to the hospital for the next five years. The auxiliary operates the hospital's new cancer boutique, which features wigs, hats and scarves for patients and visitors. During weekly wellness screenings, volunteers distribute educational brochures on diabetes. Proceeds from various volunteer activities support health care scholarships. In July 2010, the auxiliary funded 20 scholarships worth $1,000 each and then created a new scholarship to honor the hospital's physicians.

Two ordained as deacons at Bethany Baptist Church

Tommy Chadd and Rob Huffman were ordained as deacons Nov. 20 in a special service conducted by Dr. Shawn Wasson, senior pastor of Bethany Baptist Church. Wasson delivered the "charge" stressing the need for deacons in the church based on Acts 6:1-6, and how those men placed in positions of servant leadership must be godly, of good report, based on 1 Timothy 2:8-13 and emphasized both Chadd and Huffman embody traits the Bible requires of a deacon.

Southeast Missouri Music Academy student named runner-up

Elizabeth Ansberry, a student at the Southeast Missouri Music Academy, was named runner-up in the Missouri Music Teachers Association eighth-grade piano competition, which took place Nov. 6 in St. Joseph, Mo. Ansberry studies with academy director Rebecca Fulgham.
