Local man awarded Hometown Heroes Award

David Roth was awarded a Modern Woodmen of America Hometown Heroes Award for heroic acts such as changing countless tires, consoling the grieving, participating in Junior Achievement and taking care of aging family members without complaint. He was given the award by local members of the fraternal financial services organization Nov. 1. Members of Modern Woodmen's Cape Girardeau chapter presented Roth with a certificate and awarded a $100 grant to the charitable organization his choice, the Humane Society of Southeast Missouri.

Jackson resident Ken Volkerding, a financial representative with Modern Woodmen Fraternal Financial, was named representative of the Month in the Missouri East Region for October. He joined the company in October 2004.

Jackson infant wins Most Beautiful Eyes Contest

Laikyn Williams, 10 months, of Jackson was named the state winner of the Most Beautiful Eyes Contest through Prevent Blindness America. The contest was open to children up to age 17. Williams received the most votes online between Sept. 1 and 30. Williams, along with other state winners, will receive a free pair of Eagle Eyes Optics Astro and Rocketeer Sunglasses for kids, a Kids' Fisher Space Pen and will advance to the final round of judging. The three finalists and their families will receive a trip to Chicago to attend the Prevent Blindness America Annual Awards Banquet on Nov. 18. The overall winner, who will receive a $25,000 college scholarship, will be announced.
