The chapter level of the MathCounts competition was held Feb. 10 at the Cape Girardeau Career and Technology Center. Duncan Brown, a student from Jackson Junior High School, won the top mathlete award in the chapter level of the competition sponsored by the Southeast Chapter of the Missouri Society of Professional Engineers. The top two teams and top 10 individuals in the Southeast Chapter will advance to the state level of the competition to be held Saturday in Rolla, Missouri.
Members of the first place team from Jackson Junior High are Duncan Brown, first place; Winston Pais, third; Noah Sparks, fourth; Clayton Greenlee and Levi Smith. Avelina Lichtenegger is the team coach.
The second-place team from St. Vincent de Paul School are Claire Southard, second; Stone Meng, fifth; Will Dodson and Ashlynn Aranha.
Individual qualifiers include Tomero McClendon from Sikeston Junior High, sixth; Taylor Emmendorfer, St. Mary Cathedral School, seventh; Kate Wheeler of St. Teresa School in Campbell, Missouri, eighth; Bradley Cleveland, St. Mary Cathedral school, ninth; and Raghad Alakilani, Sikeston Junior High, 10th.
The top four individuals of the competition will represent Missouri at the 2017 Raytheon Mathcounts National Competition held May 14 and 15 in Orlando, Florida.
MathCounts is a series of competition and coaching programs open to sixth- through eighth-grade students. The program is designed to build critical thinking, problem solving and math skills.
