Rumor has it the cast and crew of Gone Girl frequented Muy Bueno Mexican Restaurant in Cape Girardeau during filming in 2013. If so, then Ben Affleck and crew are on the same foodie-wavelength as me! Muy Bueno is a Cape Girardeau gem. From their original location with limited tables at the Plaza, to their new home at the corner of Independence and Caruthers, the food and margaritas have always remained a staple for my taste buds! It's comforting, flavorful and quite frankly, just gosh-darn delicious. The hospitality shines as brightly as the food. The staff makes you feel like you're enjoying a meal in their very own home. Go grab a taco (or two... or three... or four... no judgement here) on Taco Tuesdays. The guac: simply out of this world. I recommend the classic beef taco or the carnitas, but my husband adores the cheese enchiladas! Beware of the chips: they're addicting and will cause fullness before entrees are served.
Let's take a trip back to 2008 -- flip phones with T9 texting, orange fake tans, Twilight everything, Beyonce's "Single Ladies," complete conversations on a friend's Facebook wall, and me, Ellen (Sikes) Gipson, a senior in high school discovering the amazing Jalisco Special (shrimp, chicken, steak, bell peppers, onions, atop of rice covered in cheese sauce and served with tortillas!) My family and I have visited El Bracero Authentic Mexican Restaurant in Sikeston, Missouri after church at least two Sundays a month for over 10 years. That's at least 240 delicious entrees prepared, 240 correct beverage orders, 240 baskets of fresh, crispy, tortilla chips, 240 bowls of tangy salsa, 240 plastic straws (sorry, Starbucks), 240 encounters of excellent customer service and 0 times with a table wait greater than 5 minutes. El Bracero's dedication to their customers and quality of service is evident. With nine locations across states and a recently expanded menu that includes black beans (yes, finally!), and many other creative, new non-traditional entree specials -- like the "Grilled Baja Seafood" tacos, "Carne Asada Fries" and the "Bracero Bowl," they are working tirelessly to grow and improve their restaurant name. El Bracero Authentic Mexican Restaurant is a definite favorite of the Sikes family.
My favorite Mexican restaurant is probably Las Brisas down in Scott City, Missouri. A lot of the places in this area have the same types of plates, but in my opinion they have the best and freshest-tasting food. Also, it's priced really nice.
I love Mexican food! Maybe it's my south Texan roots but I could eat this cuisine every day. My family and I have yet to visit all of the joints in town but we have found a few we enjoy. To begin we enjoy El Sol for their fish tacos, queso, and happy hour margaritas (awesome happy hour specials). Next is Muy Bueno for their tacos (great Taco Tuesday special)! Their authentic menu includes lingua, barbacoa, as well as other favorites. Finally, the family and I have enjoyed the fajitas at El Acapulco. We get the combo and they are tasty with big portions! Hope ya'll get out there and try some tacos soon! ¡Comiendo feliz!
My favorite Mexican restaurant is El Sol Mexican Restaurant in Cape Girardeau. I love the chips and salsa, the margaritas and the friendly atmosphere! They have a great outdoor seating area and I love it when they bring in live bands! My favorite meal is the "Vaquero Special" because.... DELICIOSO! I often say "Life without Mexican food is no life at all!"
My favorite place to get handheld Mexican fare is Burrito-Ville in Cape Girardeau. My husband and I have been working our way through the menu -- one burrito at time -- and we have yet to find one that doesn't have an awesome flavor profile. If you like avocado, make sure you add it to any of their burritos that comes with bacon; it is worth the extra cost. If you're hungry, get a double burrito. They are more than twelve inches long and bigger around than a can of soda. The atmosphere is casual and fun and you can tell the person who developed these dishes just simply loves good food.
My choice for favorite Mexican place is QDOBA Mexican Eats in Cape Girardeau. QDOBA stands out from the rest with fresh toppings and your own choices. Here you can choose how hot you want your salsa and different kinds of cheese. I really enjoy the "Burrito Bowl" -- a pile of burrito ingredients in a bowl, minus the shell. I tried roasted vegetables this time and they were great. Never had anything at QDOBA I didn't like.
Southeast Missouri is apparently facing a Mexican restaurant epidemic. There are like six restaurants in any given town around here. I watched a custard stand go under and resurrect as a Mexican restaurant. It boggles the mind. We went to Don Carlos aka "the mall Mexican joint" and they are on their taco game -- probably one of the biggest menus in the area for a vast selection of dishes. Also, I have developed an unhealthy Burrito-Ville addiction and have elevated to a two-visit Matt James Burrito habit with a side of margarita soup! Aye Caramba!
One of the first things I noticed when I moved to this area is the variety of Mexican restaurants we have to choose from. Southeast Missouri really loves Mexican food. I have gone to all of the local places and can say each one offers something enjoyable and special, but my favorite would have to be El Torero Mexican Grill. It offers all of the traditional fare at reasonable prices -- Mexican rice, enchiladas, tacos, and quesadillas. My favorite menu items at the moment include their mini nachos El Torero and shrimp quesadillas. So much cheesy goodness! In addition to great food, El Torero's stands the test of time. Whether celebrating a birthday, a soccer game, or simply grabbing a quick bite for lunch with colleagues, El Torero is a place where the food is good, life is shared and memories are made.
