Local children invited to audition for ballet

The Moscow Ballet will hold open auditions for its "Great Russian Nutcracker" at 6 p.m. Sept. 28 at Dance Extensions in Jackson. Russian soloist Boris Baskakov will conduct the audition. Applicants must have at least one year of ballet experience and be between ages 7 and young teens. The Moscow Ballet will present its performance Dec. 12 and 13 at the Bedell Performance Hall at Southeast Missouri State University's River Campus. Council seeks Dingeldein Award nominations

The Arts Council of Southeast Missouri is seeking nominations for its annual Otto F. Dingeldein Award for Achievement of Excellence in the Arts. The award, established in 1975, honors a living person or organization who has made a considerable impact on the cultural enrichment of the Cape Girardeau area. Nominations must come in the form of a letter written to the arts council board of directors describing the candidate and his or her activities that have benefited the area. Red House fund-raiser to be held Sept. 21

The Red House Interpretive Center will have its annual fund-raiser party from 6 to 11 p.m. Sept. 21 in Arena Park. Manitou will perform, with catering by Chartwells and a silent auction and short live auction. Deadline for reservations is Sept. 15.

Arts council taking sign-ups for workshops

The Arts Council of Southeast Missouri will present two workshops in October. Nancy Wylie will conduct a three day pastel landscape workshop Oct. 3 through 5 and Terry Ludwig will present a three-day portraiture workshop Oct. 26 through 28. Edward Bernard features functional glass exhibit

The functional fused glass pieces of Doug Latta of Newport, Ore., will be featured at the Edward Bernard First Friday opening reception from noon to 9 p.m. Sept. 7. Big Oak Tree State Park hosts living history day

EAST PRAIRIE, Mo. -- Big Oak Tree State Park near East Prairie will host a living history day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 8. Lace making, traditional furniture making, spinning, woodcarving, trapping, flint knapping and floorcloths will be demonstrated, with music by the band Bluegrass Revival. Gallery offers copper wrap jewelry class

Telethon of Stars will feature talent contest

PADUCAH, Ky. -- The annual Telethon of Stars will include the inaugural Last Singer Standing competition. Auditions will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 15 at the Carson Center. Finalists will eventually be chosen to perform during the Telethon of Stars on Nov. 10 and 11, selected by viewers through donations made in honor of their favorite performer during the telethon.
