19-mile Mingo Auto Tour route now open

PUXICO, Mo. -- The Mingo National Wildlife Refuge has opened its spring auto tour route. The 19-mile route opened Sunday and remains open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day through the end of May. Popular sites along the tour include Sweet's Cabin Trail, which features a Depression-era cabin, and the Monopoly Marsh Overlook. For more information, call the refuge at (573) 222-3589.

Local bands play metalfest Saturday

SIKESTON, Mo. -- The Manhattan Room in Sikeston will play host to a local Metalfest sponsored by BannedPromotions.com Saturday. Doors open at 4 p.m., and the first band takes the stage at 5 p.m. Bands on the bill include Ireyerta, Disgusted, Maelstrom, No Other, Butchered, Bare the Betrayal, Deadwater and Emaciation. Jazz ensembles to appear in concert

Jazz trumpet player Mark Zauss will join Southeast Missouri State University's jazz ensembles, Studio Jazz and the Jazz Lab Band at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Academic Hall Auditorium. The Orlando, Fla.-based Zauss performs with six of his own music groups, playing in genres from swing to Dixieland, be-bop and classical. Alaska's 'fiddling poet' to perform at Wordsfair

Ken Waldman, "Alaska's Fiddling Poet," will be a guest performer at the annual Southeast Missouri State University Wordsfair, an event celebrating the written word. The event will take place at 5 p.m. April 14 on the Kent Library portico. Waldman has performed at hundreds of universities, public schools and festivals and has published 400 poems and stories in national magazines, along with two of his own poetry books and five CDs.

Student art on display at Sikeston museum

SIKESTON, Mo. -- The 32nd annual Bootheel Regional Student Art Show is now on display at the Sikeston Depot Museum. The show includes 130 works of art by students from Sikeston, Notre Dame, Dexter, Poplar Bluff, Saxony Lutheran, New Madrid County Central, Oran and Advance schools. Depot hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. A public reception will be held April 15. For more information, call (573) 481-9967.

Notre Dame's 'My Fair Lady' begins Thursday
