Bruce Channel to perform at Kiwanis dance

Rockabilly Hall of Fame member Bruce "Hey Baby" Channel will again perform at the annual Cape Girardeau Kiwanis Club's '50s and '60s Dance, taking place from 8 p.m. to midnight April 7 at the Arena Building. Other performers include Kim Keele-Jasinski, Fred Horrell and the Flames and others. ArtsCape poster winner to be announced

The winner of the 2007 ArtsCape poster contest will be announced at the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri's First Friday reception April 6. The winner will be announced at 7 p.m. The reception, from 5 to 9 p.m., will also feature the work of artists Sandra Midgett of Texas and Herb Wickham of Jackson. Southeast Public Radio to honor poetry month

In recognition of National Poetry Month, Southeast Public Radio, 90.9 FM KRCU, will air poems each weekday during its "Caffe Concerto" and "Afternoon Classics" programs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The poems will be read by local poets and poetry lovers, including Dr. Susan Swartwout, Dr. Dale Haskell and Thomas Eaton. Poems will also be available as podcasts on www.southeastpublicradio.org.

Boyd named to state employment council

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- Neal Boyd is best known around Southeast Missouri as a great singing talent. But Boyd was recently nominated to the Missouri Training and Employment Council by Gov. Matt Blunt for his work as an Aflac associate. The council is part of the state Department of Economic Development that develops recommendations regarding the improvement of the state's employment and job training service delivery network."

Movie auditions Wednesday at Port Cape

Shrader Turner Films will host auditions for a new movie the company is producing from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Port Cape Girardeau. Parts are available for men and women between the ages of 30 and 50, and several extras will be needed. Auditioners can prepare something if they wish, but cold readings will be required. Drivin' Rain to play '80s tribute Saturday

Local rock band Drivin' Rain will play an '80s Tribute Night Party at Breakaways on Saturday. The band will perform hits from '80s metal bands, and there is no cover for those who show up in '80s costumes.

Southeast student art show opens Wednesday

Southeast Missouri State University's annual Student Art Juried Assessment will be on display at the Southeast Missouri Regional Museum on the university campus from Wednesday to April 22, starting with an opening reception from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday. Author, Sikeston native to appear at Hastings

Sikeston, Mo., native and best-selling author Robert Vaughan will make an appearance at Hastings at 2 p.m. April 7 to promote his new book, "The Masada Scroll," co-authored with Paul Block. The book deals with the discovery of an unknown gospel that predates the four New Testament gospels and deals with the relationships between the world's three major religions -- Judaism, Islam and Christianity.
