Fred Lynch retired in 2018 after capturing images for the Southeast Missourian since 1975, in that time moving from black-and-white to color, from film to digital and to video. The blog title is a nod to an earlier era of news photography and the 4x5 Speed Graphic: It's more important to be there for the shot than to worry about technical details.

Railroad underpasses long gone

The Cape Girardeau Northern railroad which was built by Louis Houck ran through two underpasses. One at Good Hope street, in front, and another at Morgan Oak street, behind it, no longer exist.

The railroad bed is now the site of the two-block, brick-paved Fountain Street extension from William Street to Morgan Oak near the River Campus of Southeast Missouri State University.

This picture by G.D. Fronabarger is looking south from William Street, in foreground. The date is unknown.

The underpass at Morgan Oak was probably the oldest remaining bridge in Cape Girardeau before it was demolished last year. Here's a blog I wrote about it earlier:
