LETTERS: CRITICISM OF PRESIDENT BROUGHT IRS AUDITS

To the editor:

Last fall I wrote a letter to the Southeast Missourian which was published. I suggested that it would evoke a response. It did.

I expressed my opinion that because of his reprehensible behavior, President Clinton should resign. Immediately upon publication, my income taxes were audited for 1996, 1997 and 1998. I have been audited once previously in 1988. I have filed a federal tax return every year since 1958.

Now, let me see how the math works out: one audit in 40 years and three audits in three years. This is an obvious attempt to punish me for my political views.

I have filed two lawsuits against the Internal Revenue Service and look forward to learning how the laws of probability explain the sudden interest in my taxes. I am rather flattered that my opinion should be so important as to cause such a response.
