It is good news for downtown Cape Girardeau that the license bureau is moving, but not very far. It is moving from a small building on Main Street to larger quarters in the 100 block of South Spanish Street owned by Charles Hutson. Many residents will remember the new location as the former Monroe Glass building. Better parking will be available at the new site. The license bureau, which needs to move to make way for development associated with nearby riverboat gambling, is a convenience for motorists who get license plates and drivers licenses. Downtown merchants see the bureau as a draw to bring people to the downtown area. Thanks to the willingness of Hutson to do some major renovation for the license bureau, it will stay in an area that appreciates it, both as a convenience and as a magnet for downtown. The move is expected to be completed by the middle of the month.
