YELL GRANTS ARE AWARDED

When volunteers took to the streets early one morning in September to hawk the special YELL edition of the Southeast Missourian, they knew the money raised would be used for literacy programs. Now the fruits of their efforts have been awarded to several agencies, all of whom will provide some remarkable programs to encourage reading and learning to read.

The $35,000 total that was raised from this year's YELL effort will go to the Newspapers In Education program that provides copies of the Southeast Missourian for use in area classrooms, the Cape Girardeau Public Library's Reading Is FUNdamental program, the Cape Girardeau Area Vocational-Technical School's adult literacy tutoring, May Greene School's Ready to Read project, the Salvation Army and L.J. Schultz School.

Everyone who purchased one of the special YELL editions is to be commended for supporting these important community programs.
