Chaffee High School's Matt Stroup has proven he's the best pitcher in the area.
Teammate G.P. Glueck is without a doubt one of the best run producers around.
And Jeremy Lynn? Maybe the best leadoff hitter and defensive center fielder in Southeast Missouri.
But Chaffee second baseman Perry Rice has put forth the most amazing feat among all the Red Devils. Rice had a hit in Chaffee's first 22 games this year. But the streak ended against Scott City in the first game of the Class 2A, District 2 tournament. Scott City's Marcus Klund made a diving play to rob Rice of a hit.
Rice, the No. 2 batter, is batting .430, fourth-best on the team. He's second on the team in hits (37), first in triples (3), second in stolen bases (12) and third in runs (30).
Jackson's Limbaugh signs with Harris Stowe
Jackson left-handed pitcher Lance Limbaugh has signed to play baseball at Harris Stowe State College.
Limbaugh, one of the best control pitchers in the area, ended the season with a 5-3 record and a 2.40 earned-run average. He struck out 59 batters in 59 1/3 innings with a stunning 8-to-1 strikeout to walk ratio. He walked only seven batters all year for an average of 0.83 walks per seven innings.
Daughhetee earns All-American award
Forget the Show Me state. Kelly's Adam Daughhetee is taking his running shoes to the national stage.
Daughhetee defended his state title in the 1,600 meter run Friday.
But the junior also drew national attention recently.
Daughhetee earned second-team honorable mention as one of the top high school Christian student athletes in the nation.
More than 8,400 student athletes were nominated from 20,000 high schools.
Athletes were selected for their academic accomplishments, athletic achievements and Christian character.
McCord changes camps
Cape Central's new basketball coach, Derek McCord, has changed some of the dates of Cape Central's basketball camps.
McCord will hold two camps for grades 3 through 8. The first one, will be held June 25-29 and the second one July 24-28. Grades 3-5 will meet from 10 a.m. till noon and grades 6-8 will meet from 1-3 p.m.
McCord has enlisted one of his former players -- Scott City graduate Jon Beck -- to help with shooting drills. Beck, a two-time all-stater and NCAA Division I player at Arkansas State, holds the Missouri High School record for most 3-pointers in a game (16).
McCord took the job at Cape Central earlier this month after 10 years at Scott City.
