MURRAY, Ky. -- Notre Dame won a three-team high school soccer tournament Saturday, outscoring its two opponents by a combined 10-0 score.

Notre Dame, which improved to 13-2, first defeated Owensboro Catholic 6-0 before downing Louisville Atherton 4-0.

Michael Gosche recorded both shutouts in goal and received plenty of early offense in each game.

Notre Dame set the tone for the day when Oliver Sanders scored just 20 seconds into the game against Owensboro.

Adam Obermiller scored the first of his goals just two minutes later as Notre Dame built a 4-0 halftime lead.

Chris Dirnberger, Tommy Wencewicz and Davidson added goals. Dirnberger finished with two assists, while Obermiller and Cory Elfrink each had one.

Against Atherton, Dirnberger staked Notre Dame to a 1-0 lead just two minutes into the game. Sanders, who had two assists, upped the lead to 2-0 before halftime. Dirnberger added a second goal in the second half and Obermiller concluded the scoring. Scott Wittenborn assisted on one of the second-half goals.

"The defense just played outstanding," said Notre Dame coach Brad Wittenborn.

Cape Central 4, Belleville Althoff 2

BELLEVILLE, Ill. -- Chris Cole scored two second-half goals as Cape Central defeated Belleville Althoff.

Cole also had an assist and John Mark Thompson had two assists and a goal as Cape Central improved to 9-7-1.

Belleville-Althoff scored on a free kick from near midfield at the 18-minute mark in the first half to take a 1-0 lead.

At the 37-minute mark of the first half, Thompson headed in a goal off the foot of Cole to tie the game 1-1 going into halftime.

Cole score Central's second goal on an assist from Justin Shelby. One minute later, Cole put in a shot on an assist from Thompson.

Just three minutes after that, Brett McNabb scored on Thompson's second assist.

Belleville scored with about four minutes left in the game to account for the final margin.

Central's junior varsity played to a 1-1 tie on an unassisted goal by Chad Proffer.

Central hosts Farmington on Tuesday.

CROSS COUNTRY

Carbondale Invitational

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Cape Central's cross country team had an impressive showing at the Carbondale Invitational Saturday, with the boys team placing third among 17 teams with 96 points and the girls taking fourth (157) among 22.

Jackson and Kelly also performed well. Jackson's girls team (180 points) took sixth and its boys took ninth (255 points), while Kelly's boys (271) took 10th.

Olney, Ill. took first on the girls side and Davies County, Ky. took first in the boys race.

The boys ran 3.1 miles, while the girls ran 2.5. Only the top 10 runners received medals.

Central's Mark Stone capped off an outstanding week, taking fourth place in a time of 16:20 on the 3.1-mile course.

"That's the best time we've had at Central for about eight years and he was about two seconds off a school record that has stood for a long time," Central coach Mark Hahn said. "I was real happy, especially with those boys times in the 16s."

Stone took third in the Anna-Jonesboro Invitational earlier this week.

Justin Hawkins, also from Central, took eighth in 16:42.

The third and last medalist from the region was also a Central athlete. Lane Thomasson took fifth in the girls race in 15:15.

SOFTBALL

Notre Dame 3, St. Vincent 2

Second-seeded Notre Dame posted a win over No. 3 St. Vincent to advance to the finals of the Class 2A District 1 Tournament.

Ramona Blankenship pitched a five-hitter, giving up two runs and a walk, while striking out six.

Notre Dame, which scored a run in the first, third and fourth innings, only mustered three hits and one of its runs was unearned.

Blankenship and Ashley Reinagel each drove in a run.

St. Vincent scored a run in the first and fifth innings. Amanda Brown and Kara Carroll each got a hit and an RBI.

The Lady Bulldogs will play Kelly for the district championship at 4 p.m. Monday.

FOOTBALL

Central 8th, 9th grades fall

The Cape Central 8th and 9th grade football teams were both bested by visiting Poplar Bluff.

The eighth-graders lost 21-13, dropping their record to 2-1, despite two touchdown runs by Mark Dunaway and Chris Slaughter.

The freshmen Tigers (2-1-1) were edged 14-7 by the visiting Mules as well. Monroe Hicks rushed for the lone Cape Central touchdown.
