SIKESTON -- The Jackson golf team quite possibly gave a glimpse of things to come in district action by winning the six-team Sikeston Invitational.

Jackson, with a score of 318, beat district rivals Sikeston (321), Cape Central (329), Farmington (330) and Poplar Bluff (330). Notre Dame took sixth with a 338.

"This is the first time we've won this invitational," said Jackson coach Ron Cook. "We've finished second before, but we've never been able to win it before this year."

Tyler Luebbers and Clint Faries both led Jackson with 18-hole totals of 78. Travis Reiminger shot 80 and John Litzelfelner scored an 82.

Sikeston followed three-strokes behind in second led by tournament medalist Ben Alcorn, who shot a 73 on the par-71 Sikeston Country Club.

Cape Central took third with Mike Oslund leading the way with the third-best score of the day. Oslund scored a 75 followed by Dane McLaird (80), Dan Groesbeck (84) and Bryan Welker (90).

Notre Dame, coming off a school-record score last week at Cape Girardeau Country Club, saw Dan Buerck lead the way with an 80. He was followed by Jonathan LeGrand (84), Matt Howard (85) and Chris Koeper (89).

BASEBALL

Jackson 1, Kelly 0

BENTON -- Jackson's Jason Goben emerged victorious in a pitching showdown with Kelly's Justin Vetter on Monday as the Indians emerged with a 1-0 victory over the Hawks.

Goben (3-1) allowed just four hits as Jackson improved to 8-5 on the season. Goben struck out five and walked two. Kelly fell to 6-5.

Vetter struck out 11 Indians without walking a batter. He allowed seven hits, including two in the top of the sixth when Jackson scored the game's lone run.

Mike Gross opened the sixth with his second hit of the game, stole second and scored on a two-out single by Todd Wessel.

Jackson returns to action today when Poplar Bluff visits.

GIRLS SWIMMING

Cape Central wins triangular

FLORISSANT -- With three first-place finishes in relay events, Cape Central won a triangular meet Monday at the Florissant Civic Center.

Central (7-7) finished with 135 points to finish ahead of McClure North (103) and Notre Dame (90).

The Lady Tigers picked up victories in the medley relay and had 1-2 finishes in 200- and 400-meter freestyle relays.

The relay events proved crucial with double points awarded.

Cape Central also took three firsts in individual events: Grace Freeman in the 200 IM (2:21.41), Laura Dombrowski in the 100 butterfly 1:09.67) and Jean Maguire in the 100 backstroke (1:09.80).

Cape Central will compete in the Springfield Invitational this weekend.
