PHOENIX -- A pair of former Diamondbacks helped give Casey Daigle a rude welcome to the majors.

Reggie Sanders homered twice, Tony Womack went 4-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI and the St. Louis Cardinals beat Arizona 13-6 on Friday night.

The Cardinals pounded Daigle for five home runs -- two by Sanders -- in 2 2-3 innings. It was the most homers allowed by a Diamondbacks' pitcher in the franchise's seven-year history.

"It was unfortunate because he went up against a tough lineup," Sanders said. "He left the ball in the middle of the plate a lot."

Scott Rolen was 3-for-5 with four RBIs, including a two-run home run and a two-run single. Albert Pujols and Ray Lankford also homered for the Cardinals.

Chris Carpenter (1-0) got his first victory since July 24, 2002, allowing five runs on seven hits in six innings.

"Chris came out and made a lot of good pitches, a lot of good pitches after that first inning," St. Louis manager Tony La Russa said.

Carpenter did not appear in a major league game last season while coming back from shoulder surgery.

"It was an exciting day for me personally, because I worked so hard to get back to this point," he said. "It was just great that I was able to do it in this situation and give ourselves a chance to win."

Sanders and Womack both still make their homes in the Phoenix area, and their wives and children were on hand to watch them play.

"This place is always special to me," Womack said. "We did a lot here. I accomplished a lot here and I had fun here."

Daigle (0-1), a 23-year-old right-hander who pitched for Double-A El Paso last season, allowed eight runs and 10 hits before he was lifted after Sanders' second homer careened off the Nissan sign 445 feet from home plate with two outs in the third.

"It wasn't very pretty," Arizona manager Bob Brenly said. "He just made a lot of mistakes in the middle of the plate, which is something we did not see him do this spring. You'd like to just chalk it up to first-game jitters and I'm sure we'll see a different outing next time."

Pujols hit a solo shot in the first inning. Sanders added a two-run homer and Womack an RBI single in the second, then Lankford, Rolen and Sanders homered in the Cardinals' four-run third.
