Collin Dannenmueller intercepted a pass inside Chaffee's own 1-yard line and the Red Devils marched 99 yards for a pivotal touchdown in a 28-14 win at East Prairie on Saturday afternoon.
Chaffee improved to 4-2, reaching the four-win mark for the first time since 1990.
"This was a big win, especially coming off the win last week against Scott City and trying not have a letdown," Chaffee coach Charlie Vickery said.
The Red Devils had beaten Scott City 21-19 the previous week in their homecoming game. They have their first three-game winning streak since 1988 and are seeking their first winning season since 1990.
East Prairie, attempting to gain its first win of the season, trailed 14-7 at halftime and was driving for a tying score when Dannenmueller stepped into a pass route for the interception. The Red Devils drove 99 yards, with Andrew Hendrix passing 21 yards to Jerrod Steger for the touchdown.
"We had four penalties on that drive that we were able to overcome," Vickery said. "We had way too many penalties, probably about 90 yards in penalties."
Chaffee rushed for 313 yards to finish with 395 yards of offense, while East Prairie had 238 yards, the majority in the air.
Steger added a 16-yard TD run in the fourth period. He finished with 94 yards on 14 carries.
Dylan McAlister, who scored Chaffee's first touchdown on a 5-yard run in the first period, led Chaffee with 109 yards rushing on 17 carries.
Dannenmueller scored the second touchdown on a 12-yard run, giving Chaffee a 14-7 lead in the second quarter.
Hendrix was 4-for-4 on extra points. He also ran for 64 yards on 11 carries and was 3-of-8 passing for 82 yards.
Chaffee, 2-0 in the SEMO South and tied with Hayti as the conference's unbeaten teams, plays Malden (1-5) in Week 7 before district battles with St. Vincent (2-4) and Hayti (6-0).
"The next one is always the biggest game, that's what I tell the kids," Vickery said. "I don't worry about Hayti until we get there."
BOYS SOCCERNotre Dame 3, Whitfield 2, SO
After an uneven effort during regulation, the Bulldogs went into a penalty-kick shootout for the first time this season and avenged last year's only loss.
Notre Dame, the defending Class 2 state champion, and Whitfield, the defending Class 1 state champion, ended regulation in a 2-2 deadlock.
Ty Williams, Josh Robert, Ryan Bass and Ryan Willen hit the shootout kicks for Notre Dame (14-2-1), while Bass, the keeper, made a save on Whitfield's first PK to give the advantage to the Bulldogs in the five-shot extra session being used to decide regular-season games this year.
"To get into the district and state playoffs and end up in a shootout when you haven't been in one all year was kind of an uncomfortable thing," Notre Dame coach Brad Wittenborn said of the rules change. "I would rather have had the win in regulation, but it was probably good for us to win in a shootout. It was a good win. They're a defending state champion and are ranked first among small schools in the St. Louis area."
Wittenborn said the Bulldogs played well early, and they scored the only goal of the first half when Williams was assisted by Joda Holloway.
Whitfield scored two goals, including one on a penalty kick, midway through the second half.
"The good thing was we got our focus back and created some chances," Wittenborn said.
Willen scored the tying goal in the final 10 minutes on an assist from Mark Zimmer.
Notre Dame plays Tuesday night at Central in the first meeting this season for the Cape Girardeau teams.
