Gators place second at Saluki International

The Gators Swim Team recently had its best finish ever at the Saluki International Long Course event in Carbondale, Ill., last weekend.

The Gators scored 717 points, finishing second only to Parkway of St. Louis County in the three-day meet. The Gators finished ahead of St. Louis County programs Rockwood and Clayton-Shaw Park as well as the host host Saluki club.

"Our kids swam real well," Gators coach Steve Franklin said. "Our distance training is really paying off."

Gators point-scorers were: Steffan Troxel (127), Caleb Coots (111), Sam Gramling (106), David Welker (84), Katie Luehmann (64), Angela Welker (41), Morgan Fraser (40), Peyton Waggener (39), Susan Beth Scott (23), Kris Metje (20), Jake Pewitt (18), John Wolpers (14), Hunter Givens (12), Debbie Janisse (11), and Jenifer Willett (7).

Troxell had three first-place finishes, and Fraser added one.

Local duo wins cruiser class feature

The team of Trankler and Bartels, of Cape Girardeau, won the cruiser class feature May 15 at Poplar Bluff Speedway. The team of Southard and Westrich, of Jackson, finished fourth.

Other first-place finishers last weekend: Billy James of Sikeston, Mo., in the late model feature; Robert Powers of Campbell, Mo., modified feature; Tony Anglin of Hoxie, Ark., super street feature; and Kyle Berry of Poplar Bluff, Mo., pure street feature.

Historic Hanover run scheduled for Saturday

The 13th annual Historic Hanover Ascension Run will include one- and five-mile runs on Saturday evening. The runs will start and finish at Hanover Lutheran Church, 2949 Perryville Road inCape Girardeau.
