It is always good to welcome newcomers to Cape Girardeau, particularly when they bring ideas and experience that could, in some way, make this a better place to live. Such an example is Dr. Stanley Grand, the new director of the Southeast Missouri State University Museum.
Grand, who previously directed an art gallery at a small college in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., has a lot of ideas for the future of the university museum here.
Of course, that future includes a move to the planned River Campus for the visual and performing arts. This would mean a brand-new facility. How exciting it must be to have that kind of input on such an important project.
One idea of Grand's is worthy of immediate attention. He would like to extend the hours of the existing museum on the SEMO campus to include weekends.
Hear! Hear!
Much of the public's access to some of this community's best treasures relies on the willingness of the university and historical organizations to open the doors to museums when the public is most likely to want to see inside.
The university, through faculty and student volunteers, ought to be able to make it happen.
