One of the most important resources we have is the experience of those who came before us.
That's why a small group is taking steps to ensure the experiences and histories of area World War II veterans are recorded.
Relying largely on word of mouth, Shirley Young, Catherine Allison and Frank Nickell have invited local veterans to share their stories. During sessions with a recorder, photographer and interviewer at the Cape Girardeau Public Library, the veterans talk about their experiences at war.
"These histories will be lost if we don't get them now," Allison told TBY.
Now, with decades separating the veterans from their service, they are finding it is a bit easier to talk about the things they did and saw.
"It was hard for them to talk about when they first got back -- too raw and hurtful," Allison said.
The recordings of the sessions will eventually be made available to anyone wishing to know more about these veterans' experiences.
Allison said they have had a good response rate, and those few who have declined to particpate have done so due to failing health -- underscoring the importance of the project.
We commend Young, Allison and Nickell on their efforts to preserve this irreplaceable part of our history.
Those wishing to get involved with the project may contact Allison at (573) 335-0547.
