Innovative teachers often run into a roadblock in their efforts to reach their students: money -- or the lack of funding to obtain the programs and materials that involve and inspire young learners. The Cape Girardeau Public School Foundation helps with annual awards for teaching grants.

This year, the foundation is providing nearly $26,500 to 14 innovative teachers, up from the $15,000 awarded last year to nine teachers.

Several of the recipients plan to use the extra funding to promote reading skills, but other areas include careers, archaeology, test preparation, physical activity, computer monitoring, science and field trips.

Congratulations to the teachers for thinking of ways to improve learning opportunities for students. And congratulations to the foundation for raising the money to underwrite these creative projects.
