AS A mother of a student from a local school I think it is plain crazy to have a prom at a motel. I do know one and only one school that has its prom at the school. That is great to hear something like that. When I went to school, we had the prom in our gym, and the mothers of the junior class cooked the meal at school. It would and could probably be done that way now too. It wouldn't cost the junior class as much as it does. How do other parents feel about proms the way they are now?...

Prom at school?

V-E attendance

THERE WERE very few World War II veterans, sons and daughters at the Victory in Europe ceremonies at the veterans home here in Cape Girardeau. I attended the ceremonies. Sure is terrible, isn't it.

Burglary response

I WOULD like to thank the Cape Girardeau County Sheriff's Department for its quick handling of the burglary at our house in Oak Ridge. Special thanks to Detective David Gaines and Deputies Jordan and Alfred for the professional way the handled the investigation, and thank you very much for finding my possessions so quickly. You are all appreciated.

Free to be uncivil

THIS IS in response to the individual thinking that everybody should be civil in a college town. Part of what we learn in college is that this is a free country, and a person has the right to be civil or uncivil. A person should not have to say "hi" when somebody's going down the street.

Chaffee play day

THIS IS regard to the comment on Chaffee play day. Just what PAT meeting were you at? You most certainly weren't at the one that I attended. We were told by the PAT president that the PAT had nothing to do with play day and that this discussion was to be handled through the school and not at PAT meetings. I'm afraid that you were not at that meeting, and you were grossly misinformed.

Credit for Rademaker

IN THE article about Joey Haines receiving OVC track coach of the year award, why does he completely ignore the contribution made by Tim Rademaker? In addition to his regular work as a member of P.E. department at SEMO, Rademaker for many years has served as unpaid coach for the pole vaulters on the track, and those athletes contributed a large portion of the points that enabled the men's team to take the OVC title. Why doesn't the university give this man some recognition.

Clinton helps GOP

THIS IS for you Democrats who keep praising Bill Clinton in Speak Out. Don't you people realize that Bill Clinton and his bungling administration are the primary reasons the Republicans took control of Congress in November? Haven't you figured out that Bill Clinton is the best thing that has happened to the Republicans and the worse thing that has happened to the Democrats? If you really cared about your beloved Democratic Party, you would be urging other prominent Democrats to run for president in 1996 instead of trying to promote the man who has made a shambles of your party in only two short years.

More on play day

I MUST respond to the article on voting for play day. I happened to attend these meetings, and I don't recall having the opportunity to vote whether or not play day would be changed. The principal told us changes would be made. Then a mother stood up and told us the changes that would be made. As far as taking a vote, we did not. Why do you think a petition was sent around with over 140 signatures on it? That is the only vote we had, which didn't count. The only thing concerning play day that was voted at the PAT meeting was if we would OK PAT to donate over $300 for snacks, which is a debate in itself. Our kids work hard on those fund raisers, and then a few parents make a motion to throw over $300 out the window on non-educational nonsense. Up until this year, the parents sent a couple of dollars to school with their child on play day, and PAT money was used for educational reasons, not on soda and candy. Our school is backing down and catering to a few parents' requests. I too am for majority rule. Parents did not attend this PAT meeting because many of them did not know about the play day discussion going on. The PAT president made the announcement that PAT was not responsible for any of those changes.
