I WANT to comment about the controversy that's arose about a member of the school board. I think it's mighty poor when this political correctness has hit Cape. It doesn't make any difference what the man's opinion is, as long as he does his job. Remember, all the liberals say you that you should be able to do and say anything in your private life. Well, here we are. Let's live up to what we've been saying. This is a tragedy, a family tragedy. I certainly understand a man who wants to protect his children and his daughter. Unfortunately, I feel sorry for him because, having been through something like this myself, I can tell you don't hardly stand a chance. Society's against you and you see your kids doing things that will absolutely going to ruin their lives, but there ain't nothing you can do about it. I feel sorry for this member of the school board, and I am behind him and I am sympathetic with him.
I AM concerned about the respect we have for our mail carriers. I think that more Jackson residents and Cape residents and everybody around should treat them with equal respect and be more kinder and nicer to them. So shape up everybody.
I QUESTION the journalistic ethics of the Southeast Missourian in printing the names of the school board member's daughter and her boyfriend. Teen-agers engaged in puppy love have enough problems without having a romance glorified by being mentioned in print in the local paper. The public's need to know that the school board member is unhappy with his daughter for inter-racial dating or letting her unlicensed boyfriend drive her car is far outweighed by the harm that you could have caused to these young people by the article.
I WOULD like to make a comment about the trash limits comment. This individual is speaking of discrimination from a single householder to a family of eight and both parties being allowed three bags of trash per pickup. I too am a single home holder. I do not put out three bags of trash per week. In fact, I put out one bag every other week. I also recycle even though I am just a single homeowner. I could just throw it in the trash and put out three bags of trash every week if I wanted to, but I'm concerned about our environment so I recycle. I put out probably five big bags of recyclable goods every two or three months so I feel I am doing my part. I am paying the same price as people who put out three bags of trash every week, even though I only put out one bag every other week, and I am not griping even though I do feel it may be a little unfair that I'm paying the same price. Until the city of Cape Girardeau changes it's policies, I'm going to do my best to control my garbage situation and recycle, which we all should do. But I really do think the city ought to look at volume charging only I don't know how they would do it unless they would keep track of the number of bags put out at each home.
I'M A fairly new resident to Cape, and I've been following people's comments about trash collection here. Instead of having a limited number of bags of trash going out to the curb every week like the woman said, why not just have mandatory recycling so that everyone has to recycle and therefore the trash going into the landfill is only non-recyclable stuff? This makes perfect sense to me because that's what we did in the community that I used to live in. I'm kind of curious to see what everyone thinks about that.
OUR SCHOOL board has made real progress in the past few months. They should not have to spend valuable time discussing a board member's personal problems. If Mr. Taylor is really sincere about what is best for the Cape school system, he should resign immediately.
SINCE DEMOCRATS in White House and Congress seem to blame everything on the mean-spirited Republicans, how will they twist the floods in the northwest and the freezing cold weather in the rest of the country as being caused by the actions of Newt and his fellow congressmen trying to pass the Contract With America? It makes about as much sense.
I'D JUST like to comment on how much better the Central Tiger newspaper is now that Stan Clark and Dustin Michael are writing for it again. I noticed it was looking a bit skimpy last time when the boys weren't writing. Well, it just looks a whole lot better. It had a nice touch of humor along with good hard solid journalistic stuff. It's good stuff and it makes the paper a whole lot more wholesome.
IF BILL Clinton by hook or crook gets re-elected, everybody can count on four more years of nothing but vetoes, that means nothing will get done and four more years of sending our people off to war in another country.
I SIT and listen to the preacher preach and preach and preach about how they took the Ten Commandments off the walls at school. Don't have no more Ten Commandments in our public schools, it's just something awful. Well, brother, you'd better go out and look because there's none on your walls at church. The deacon.
THIS IS in response to the person who called in about gays and lesbians in churches. I just wanted you to know that if you believe you are so self-righteous and you are so religious, maybe you need to take you Bible out again and look. It not only says that mankind shall not lay with mankind for it is an abomination, it also says judge not lest ye be judged and let he who is without sin cast the first stone. As we all know, God put us all on this earth to get along, and apparently we are all failing at that issue. And no, God did not leave anybody on this earth to judge anybody. Any sin, no matter how great or how small, is still a sin, and that person should not forget it.
LET THE people who do not recycle be responsible adults. Yes, I have quit recycling. Until the city does what they said they were going to do I will no longer recycle. I am a responsible adult, and I have been recycling ever since it started here in Cape Girardeau. But the city council promised to make people pay more that didn't recycle and I am paying $12.13 a month for trash pickup, and I seldom have any trash. It was always recyclable stuff. So until the city starts charging the people for their trash, then I will return to recycling.
JAY EASTLICK, it's a nice article about the flat tax plans. Interesting to see how much less everybody's going to be paying. To make up for this loss, somebody's got to be paying more. Who is it?
CONGRATULATIONS, JAY Eastlick, for your very revealing article "Trip on the Internet" in Monday's Missourian. I've always heard the phrase "Figures don't lie, and liars won't figure." Thank you for helping us to see the light.
IN RESPONSE to the caller who had relatives visiting from Denver and who seemed to be unable to understand what was being said to them because of our so-called hillbilly slur. I too have relatives from Denver who visit, and they absolutely love the area and have no problems whatsoever understanding our speech patterns. Could it possibly have something to do with the intelligence levels of the caller's visitors?
I'M CALLING in regards to a picture in the Feb. 13 Missourian about Eagle Scouts dedication. It appears odd to me that with 50 some odd boys up there with Eagle Scouts, you take a picture of these dignitaries who had really not as much to do with the presentation and all the information regarding the Eagle Scouts. I can see where it's just looking like it was for these six or seven high powered men to get their distinctive awards rather than the boy scouts. In future, I think it would behoove the newspaper to put the pictures of the Scouts in there rather than these men. Nobody cares about these men. We want to see the Scouts. I happened to attend that ceremony on Saturday and was very, very disappointed in the newspaper's coverage.
I WOULD like to comment on the fellow who called in about not wanting to recycle just because some of his neighbors didn't. I'd say that he is a jerk, and I agree with those who disagree with him. Just because your neighbors do not recycle, you shouldn't quit also. But the real jerks in this matter are the city council. On numerous times through the Speak Out column and actually talking with some of the councilmen, I've urged them to either sell bags or stickers to put on your regular bag. And those who do not recycle, they could buy as many as they want and spend whatever they wanted to each month. Those who recycled would come out money ahead. Be much better off. I think more people would be happy that way. It seems all that the council wants to do is to add more burden to the taxpayers of this city. For instance, every tipping fee that they save throughout the year by using some kind of mandatory or recycling plan, we could save hundreds of thousands of dollars a years just on tipping fees alone.
IF THE Ministerial Alliance allows this gay church to enter into their group, then there should not be a single pastor or church out there in this community that should remain or have their name associated with them. You cannot stand there in your pulpits and tell people what the Bible says and not understand that homosexuality is wrong. And for any church to remain in the Ministerial Alliance will ruin their testimony in front of every other Christian in this town. I say it's time that they stand up and start saying we cannot just accept anybody or anything in here. We have to accept what God's word says.
I WOULD think that Pat Robertson and his Christian Coalition would have better use for their money than the likes of sending me three different letters wanting a donation and wanting to know I'm going to vote this fall. Well, I'm here to tell you, it's none of Pat Robertson's business how I'm going to vote.
I WISH to respond to the comment about hillbilly accents in Southeast Missouri. While I find nothing intelligent about someone sounding like a rube. Some people actually try to talk this way because they think it's cool to be a redneck in the buffoon zone like Jeff Foxworthy.
