I'M ADDRESSING the issue of the sting operation. I thoroughly agree with the another caller about publicizing these peoples' names. I don't condone the activities going on at the park, and I think they should be handled. But I don't think it was necessary at all in publishing these peoples' names and ruining the lives of these people who have a problem. There are families and children. Where is the compassion of our reporters? Have we become such a big city that this is how we do things now? It's cheap journalism, and I just cannot agree with it.
THIS IS in reference to the amendments. In Sunday's paper you've got Amendments 1 through 8 plus Proposition A, and I think that's very well done. I appreciate it, because there are a lot of people who have no idea of what's being voted on or how much it's going to cost if it passes. I think this is a very good thing.
REPUBLICAN STATE Senator Peter Kinder says the Missouri gubernatorial election in 2000 may turn on the issue of school choice. If that turns out to be the case, the campaign will be the most boring in American political history. Surely we can do better than that. Whatever happened to the "Make my day" issue of whether or not qualified Missourians should be allowed to carry concealed weapons?
WATCHING THE Clinton defense team denouncing and degrading the Christian ministers on their stand for decency and morals in the White House is shameful. The Democratic Party must feel very proud.
THE LIBERAL wing has control of the Democratic Party. They talk about Roosevelt and Truman, who wouldn't have given the time of day to this trash and their trashy lifestyles. I think we should swallow our pride and check it out for ourselves. Maybe we can get our party's dignity and morals back.
I WOULD like to speak to these people who make appointments and then do not keep them. This works a hardship on the people you've made the appointment with. This has happened to me three times within the past month. Someone made an appointment and did not show up. These people should have more respect for the people they make appointments with and be decent enough to at least call and tell them that you can't make it or you're not interested.
SO A Methodist complained in a letter that she prays that the Southeast Missourian will exercise better judgment with responsible reporting in the future. Excuse me, the Southeast Missourian was only doing its job. Now I pray that law enforcers will continue to arrest those flaunting their perverse pleasures in our public parks, and I pray that the Southeast Missourian continues to report names and addresses of such perverts.
THERE HAS always been talk about the awards shows that go on and on past news time and how they make an effort to break for news. Too bad this can't be done for football. I personally think that unless the game was almost tied, like within three points or something, or certainly not over seven points, that they should go on with regular TV such as "60 Minutes." I don't think they should preempt any shows for football games that drag on and on.
I THINK that if the Cape Girardeau City Council is going to pass an ordinance governing trees, the trees should have a say in this matter. So far I have talked to ten trees, including three money trees, and they tell me that if the City Council goes through with this, they will really be going out on a limb.
IN HIS usual manner, Peter Kinder gets everything screwed up. This time he's been talking about the separation of church and state, vouchers and things like that. I think, Peter, you should understand that my family came to the United States hundreds of years ago because the Pope ran them out of France. The other side of the family came to the U.S. from England because the Church of England was trying to control their religious freedom. If you don't learn from history, then there's something wrong with you. The separation of church and state must be kept. The idea of trying to slip in some politically expedient thing is silliness. Don't try to be a typical lawyer-politician.
IT'S TIME to get rid of all the stupid campaign commercials. It's time for us to get excited and get out to vote. I want to encourage you to vote for people who vote for the rule of law, who believe our politicians have to obey the same laws as the rest of us and who believe that things can be better in the United States. We have a great future. Let's go vote for it.
A DOCTOR who performed abortions was killed in New York, and the news media went berserk, saying "What a tragedy. What kind of person could do this?" I deplore the murders, but to say nothing of the millions of children aborted over the years is a tragedy. It shows what a sick society we have.
I WOULD like to call attention to a super Halloween decoration at 425 North High in Jackson. This is about one-half block north of the American Legion Hall. I think the residents of the area who are interested in Halloween would really be happy to see this decoration.
IT SAYS the Cape school board is considering naming schools after living persons. I would like to suggest that they name a school after Miss Inez Smith. Miss Smith was never an administrator, and she was not an elementary school teacher, but I believe that Miss Smith did more for the youth of Cape Girardeau and the people of Cape than anyone else in the educational field here in Cape Girardeau. I think the board should give serious consideration to naming a school after Miss Smith for her many years of dedication, hard work and interest in not only the students, but also the community of Cape Girardeau.
