Golden years have some tarnish

I AM a very senior citizen, and I just learned some shocking news. Senior citizens are the major carriers of AIDS: Medicaid, Band-Aids, walking aids, hearing aids, aids for our children. The golden years have come at last, and these golden years can kiss my petootie.

Spend tax dollars on Social Security, debt

I THINK I've heard everything now. I've always been a Republican but now I wonder if I have been right. U.S. Sen. John Ashcroft doesn't think we need to raise the price of cigarettes $1.10 per pack. It would be hurting the poor. I could go along with this if welfare or Medicaid didn't have to pay their medical bills later in life, which is what they have been doing. Medicaid money is our tax dollars that should be spent on more important things such as Social Security or the national debt.

Take a molester's hand and chop it off

THIS IS in regards to Colleen Gabriel's over-the-rainbow letter about child molestation. If I take the hand of the man who molested me, it will be to chop it off so he cannot do this to another child, not to lead him into understanding.

Thanks for saving old seminary

THE PURCHASE of the old St. Vincent's Seminary is indeed the answer to prayers, and it's the most sensible act in this city to date. It is the most beautiful view of the river that is left to us. I thank everybody who participated.

Sometimes paddling is in order

IN RESPONSE to the person about disciplining children in their home. I agree 100 percent. But if mom and dad are working 40 hours a week, then children are left in the hands of their teachers. Sometimes, again, paddling is in order.

Charen is right about tobacco tax

AMEN TO Mona Charen's commentary, "Taxing smokers for fun and profit." The legislation proposing more tax on tobacco is "done in the name of solving a problem that the federal government cannot solve: teen smoking."

Stop means -- well, it means stop

WANTED: DRIVERS who can read the word STOP and can comprehend its meaning. These drivers are needed to drive through the intersection of Siemers and Bloomfield Road in Cape Girardeau. Obviously the drivers who are driving through this intersection now do not know the meaning of the word stop. That does not mean coast, drive through slowly or not slow down at all.

Kinder out of step on gun issues

I THINK that it's about time somebody gets some control over Peter Kinder and his foolishness about guns. I was just reading in the paper that the a poll showed 76 percent of the people were in favor creating more restrictions of handgun ownership. Two-thirds of gun owners want stricter gun laws. Why doesn't Peter get in line with the rest of the world instead of walking out of step like he is?

Another year of great talent

JUST WANT to say a thank you to Mike Dumey and his choir at Schultz School for again putting on a wonderful play, "Hercules." Another year of great talent and a super job.

Proper safety for children in cars

I SAW a friend of mine driving around town with his beautiful granddaughter sitting in his lap. I wanted to stop him, but I didn't. We need to remember to keep kids seat belted and away from airbags. If he had even a little wreck, his granddaughter could be hurt badly by the airbag in the steering wheel. Keep your kids in the back seat and in their seat belts. We love them.

Better doctors are more organized

I CAN'T figure out most of the doctors here in Cape Girardeau. When you're at the doctor's office and you wait and you wait and you wait and they say well, the doctor's had an emergency, he's at the hospital. When you're at the hospital, waiting to see the doctor, they say, well, the doctor has his patients to see. I find the better the doctor, the more organized he is and the shorter the wait.

Paddling, not guns, used to be the norm

I AM calling from the Neanderthal generation concerning a Speak Out comment. We were raised in a time when paddling was the norm for doing something wrong, not abusive by any means. So were our children. It's strange that neither our generation or our children's generation went to school and ever heard of students killing other students and teachers. I wonder what the correlation might be.

Add your name to list for Comedy Central

PLEASE IF, you're interested in getting Comedy Central to TCI Cable, please call them and voice your opinion. They used to carry Comedy Central. If you're interested, please call them. They have a list, and you can have your name added to the list.

Put spanking back in schools

THIS IS in response to the Speak Out comment, "Parents should do the spanking." I disagree with this, because parents are not spanking their children. I have been a substitute teacher in all grade levels from grade school through high school for over 15 years. I'm a college graduate. I've worked with juveniles in a detention home, and I've worked with adults in prison. And I can tell you as a substitute teacher that I have had more negative feedback from students than I have from any other source, simply because they know that as a teacher you can't touch them. Any teacher you speak to who has been teaching for over 10 years will tell you that when they took spanking out of the public school system and when they took the Pledge of Allegiance out of the school schedule, that is when your discipline problems began. Yes, it belongs first in the home, but unfortunately for so many children, it's not happening there. We need to put spanking back in the classroom and discipline the children to let them know that this type of behavior, this negative behavior, foul mouth and their negative attitude will not be tolerated. School is for education.
