A PERSON recently called Speak Out and suggested that because the women won more gold medals, they were obviously better athletes than men. But this isn't necessarily true. They win against other women. If they had played against men, they wouldn't have won any.
I'D LIKE to start this by saying I have a problem. About six months ago I was eliminated along with eight others, from employment at one of the Fortune 500 companies here in the United States. I and the other eight people had worked for this company a minimum of 15 years, and we were eliminated because we were flat making too much money. They did away with our positions, and now we are now all unemployed. For the last six months, I have sent resumes out at least two per week to different companies and can't even get an interview. I don't know what to do. I need help. I have even tried and put applications at local retail places here in town. I get an interview, and they tell me, "You won't stay here. You've made too much money in the past, and you won't be happy." All I want is a job. I'm not looking to make the money I did before. I just want to go back to work. I've never drawn unemployment in my life, and I don't intend to but I just want to go to work. Will someone please give us a chance? We just want to make a living. If anyone has any suggestions out there, I would love to hear about how we can obtain a job. I cannot even get a job making minimum wage, because people will not expect me to stay there.
WE HAVE adopted a new policy in our household with respect to all media sources when they refer to a sitting president as Mr. rather than President. We immediately change to another channel, because we consider this language very degrading to the office of president. A Mr. Clinton lives on our street but has nothing to do with running our country. I really wish all media sources would show respect to the office of president and say President and not Mr.
A CALLER asked how the school board members would like to have their salaries frozen. That is typical of the level of knowledge of critics in this town. School board members get no pay. They take all this abuse for free. The funds for paying teachers and the funds for building schools are completely separate. Your newspaper should not print obvious misinformation.
TEACHING IS a demanding profession in which the rewards are often obscured by the frustrations. Given the near impossibility of raising a family on a teacher's salary, especially with no cost-of-living increase, it's no wonder that so many talented young people are leaving the field.
I'M CALLING about SEMO basketball. You've got to give Ron Shumate credit. He recruited the most talented team to ever grace our SEMO floor, once he got through the eight-year rule. It's a shame he's not here to coach them to the OVC championship this year.
I WANT to let Schnucks grocery store know that they have a checker by the name of Esther who needs to be checker of the month. She is so kind and has a big smile for all who comes through line. And to me a smile makes for a good day. Thank you, Esther. Keep your wonderful smile. I always make sure I go through checkout line when I do my shopping. Schnucks should be very proud to have you working for them.
THIS IS in response to the "No government reports on DARE program" in Speak Out. I have a son who is a DARE officer, one I'm very proud of. One time he came to me and said, "Mom, I'm so tired of people saying the DARE program isn't working." I said to him, "Son, at one time God actually hated the day he created man, but because of one man named Noah, God saved the whole world. So if you can go out there and change one little boy or one little girl or convince one of them to say no, then your program hasn't failed. Because it just takes one." This is a concerned mother and a grandmother who believes in the DARE program.
IF CAPE Girardeau's school district is in such dire straits, why do we have a full-time athletic director who does not teach, paid coaches on staff and countless dollars going toward an athletic budget? If our dollars are limited, we should concentrate on academics first and athletics later.
IF THE Family Resource Center doesn't have a lot of money, they need not look at the old St. Francis Hospital site for any use whatsoever. It would cost at least $2 million to $3 million extra to convert the old hospital into anything that is useful.
